I don't know if we was misdiagnosed two weeks ago or what... I came here a total mess.. Got the hang of giving him shots and testing him, and before I know it..his number are RIGHT down to under 100 almost always. He goes lower after eating, so his little pancreas must have kicked into gear. He's been off shots for 6 days and gets lower every day...:) Is this really possible after 1 WEEK of insulin (and a diet change?) I just can't believe it.... very happy, but very skeptical.. I spent over $1000 (as you all well know) on his tests and diagnoses.. In any case... for any newbies here, all I can say is TEST TEST TEST...if I didn't I probably would have killed furbaby if I followed vets advice to keep giving him shots!

Hope this keeps up!

What wonderful news! One more week and he can be declared officially OTJ!

I think many vets do not understand the value of diet (most of their nutrition classes are presented by the big pet food manufacturers). Nor do they factor in stress as a component of blood glucose levels taken in their offices. Both those things can lead to insulin being prescribed when a food change might make the difference.

I am not for sure about missed dx, but when Civvie Slappy went to the vet after not eating for 3 days, they did blood work and her bg test was 347ish and he told me that number would more than likely come down once she was feeling better and it did.
However, Bean lost weight for no reason from 12 to 8 lbs, peeing alot, drinking alot (living in the bathroom at the sink), and feeling lousey...She was dx on the 21 of April and her last shot -mini doses was 5/24...
I will keep her on low carb food and treats the rest of her life, just in case!
She is now back up to 9.9 lbs (mamma has a scale) :-D and acts and looks sooo much better. And momma is one happy camper regardless if it was a misdx.
I would suggest to keep testing as I am sure you will and BEEEEE HAPPPY!

Congratulations, and keep up the good work, Obie's pancreas!

Is it possible over-emphasize the importance of changing our furrbabies' diet? I certainly don't think so. Even a small decrease in the carb content of their food seems to make a huge difference in some kitties. I've wondered many times over the past month just how many cats' lives have been saved from going hypo by the people at FDMB being here when our vets weren't available.

Super job, ObieAndMe!

I'm going to second how important diet change is....it only took Maxwell one week of a diet change and a short course of insulin to get him OTJ, and on November 1st of this year he celebrated his first year of being OTJ...He was definitely a diabetic when he was diagnoised but just a small tweak in his diet, insulin and testing him at home has given him the first of what I hope is many more years insulin free....But even though he isn't on insulin, he is still a diabetic, so he can never go back to high carb dry food. And really after seeing what the switch in diet has done for the entire fur gang here ...all 13 of them....I would never ever feed dry again. My civies (non-diabetics are stunning, so soft, so sleek they almost look wet and they have all become lean and muscular on their new diet.
