DH found a knot on SpikeKitty's neck, right side below the jaw. It's about the size of a 'shooter' marble. I can't find any wound, it moves around but feels connected to something on down the side of the throat. It's in the loose skin around his neck so we've been overlooking it for a while, no idea how long it's been there. I had trouble finding it the first time as it sort of sinks into folds or into neck muscles. I've looked at cat anatomy and can't find anything that SHOULD be there.

Any ideas? ...other than the awful one we're both suspecting, feels like HarleyDog's cancerous lymph nodes.... nailbite_smile

THANKS!

Re: O/T - Large knot on civie's neck....

((((Lyresa)))) I hope it's nothing more than a cyst. Does it seem to be painful? Sending lots of vines for the "marble" to go away.

Hugs, scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Thanks for the hugs Ella...boy I need them about now. It's not painful, he doesn't flinch or pull away any time I've felt it. It doesn't feel soft like fluid, feels fairly solid but not hard. I noticed he's lost a bit of weight, not much but not quite as 'round' as usual.

Re: O/T - Large knot on civie's neck....

Get the kitty to the vet as soon as possible, please, and have them do a biopsy on it. If it's a cyst, it can be removed, and your kitty will be fine.

I just recently lost a civvie due to a lump behind her right ear, which grew bigger, and made the right side of her jaw swell up so that she couldn't eat. I had a biopsy done on it, and unfortunately it turned out to be squamous cell carcinoma. I was devastated, and I knew that there was nothing we could do for her. Now, I'm watching the rest of them very closely. My vet said that he's seen this in older cats. I'm not sure how old my late civvie was, but I know she wasn't no 10-12 year old, and quite possibly had been older.

Sending tons of positive thoughts, and healing vines for your civvie. I pray to the good Lord that it's nothing serious. I really don't want anyone else to experience what I've just gone through.

Re: O/T - Large knot on civie's neck....

The fact that it is freely movable, ie not anchored, is a good sign.

Sounds very much like a cyst or a non-cancerous growth such as a lipoma (fat blob).

IT'S AN ABCESS!!!!! It's NOT cancer!!! It was very deep in the neck but it's opened and draining - shoving ab's down his throat!!!

Oh I iz just SO DARN HAPPY!!!!!!!! YARD DANCE!!!!!!!!!!!

Wondeful news! The same thing happened to our GA Mr Kitty many years ago. He got in a scuffle with our other GA civvie Mario, and one of Mario's claws got stuck in Mr K's neck. We didn't find out until the lump formed. He was A-OK in no time, and I know the same will be true for SpikeKitty.

BJ, really no idea what caused it BUT I wonder about something....about 5 years ago, Spike had a bad, deep puncture wound in that area. We believe he fell off the roof and hit a winter hydrangea stalk on the way down OR ran into one on the ground chasing a mouse. It had just happened when I saw him huddled against the wall with blood on his chest. Rushed to vet, xrays said whatever went almost completely thru then back out. We also discovered he has situs inversus - Hallalujah because it would have punctured his heart if it had been on the right side. It took a while to heal it, infection pockets developed a couple of times before we finally kicked it. Xray didn't show anything in there but I've always wondered...he's had a couple of these before but never really deep like this one. I wonder if there really is something small left in there. When it drained, it smelled AWFUL too, worse then usual. The lump is gone now...it's still leaking a bit, I'm applying warm compresses every hour or so.

BIG HUGS TO ALL!!!! Yep, I'm DANCIN' BIG!!!
