If ketone levels are anything above Trace, you need to get to an ER vet immediately. The recipe for developing DKA = an insufficient supply of insulin + inappetance + infection OR other systemic stresses. Ketones can develop any time but seems more so with staying in higher BG numbers.
 
High levels of ketones are a medical emergency and could quickly become deadly. Please go NOW to your vet or ER

WHEW!!! I thought the ketone reading was high. If you are seeing a trace please continue monitoring the ketone levels. As Yong said anything over a trace is a concern and can get serious very quickly. A full blown DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) is an emergency situation and very costly ( $3000-$4000) so keeping ahead of ketone increases is important.

Follow Kris' advice-- more water to flush out the ketones, make sure she gets her insulin, and be on alert for either a rise in ketones or a decrease in her appetite. At early stages, things like sub-cutaneous fluids and anti-nausea meds can really help nip things in the bud-- ketone problems tend to fall into a vicious cycle, especially once they stop eating.

And also as Kris says, usually there's something else going on to trigger the cycle-- hopefully that is now taken care of in this case with the spider bite and there isn't anything else.

Is she feeling/acting OK otherwise?
 
Yea she is ok,we are trying diffrent food,she wont eat the food she use to like. yea we played earlier. not eating as much as id like tho. gave her the shot so hopefullu in am all is good still
 
A lot of times cats will develop an aversion to the food they were eating when they started feeling yucky. Sometimes they forget after a while, sometimes they don't, but in the meantime it's probably best to try some different foods. Glad she's feeling good!
 
She wont eat her wet food this am, had to give her fancy feast dry food,i know not good for her,but she gobbled that right up.
 
Since its friday and want to avoid er decided to take her to her vet. she seemed a little off. they said they are going to give her anti biotic shot,sub q fluids and some sort of pill to increase her appetite. she isnt dehydrated, abdomen feels ok. think its just some fallout from dka episode.

If they are giving Convenia for the antibiotic shot please ask for something else. Convenia has caused problems with a lot of kitties and since it is a long acting A/B if there is a reaction there is nothing that can be done to reverse it. Did they test for ketones?
 
No test for ketones unless its worse monday. i test at home too for that. she was in low range. they gave conventia shot like er did

IMO the vet should have done a quick blood test to check for ketones. Ketones show up in the blood earlier than in the urine. If there was any question about ketones it should have been addressed before it gets any worse.
 
When they were giving her the sub q fluids,there was a big like bubble where she was getting it inserted,said its normal and may move around to front or so. i forgot to ask how long till this fluid lump goes away? im assuming a day or so since vet said she was to dehydrated. anyone gave info for that? thx

It can take a day or two to dissipate.
 
A "bubble" from administration of sub q fluids is normal. It is because of the volume given and the time it takes for the body to absorb. Yes it will take a day or so depending on how hydrated she is and how much fluid was given. Please be aware it will move based on gravity. It might move down to the tummy or even a leg or paw. In the paw, this type of thing can look alien - don't panic if the paw looks 2 - 3x normal size. That is not a problem. Fluid under the skin in a cat is very different from a human. In a human fluid under the skin can cause a painful blister, but in a cat their skin is elastic.
 
I got her some more high calorie food she seems to like,eating more,still not liking her diabetic diet foods yet tho
 
She is back to normal! i have been feeding her friskies savory shreds for higher calories and evo dry food. i know i need to switch back to her pates. ive noticed now she is drinking ALOT
 
She is so picky about her food,i hope she goes back on her diet,she loves the shreds,begs for it. i do home test,will test later today
 
Got her on regular diet plus evo dry and her numbers are still high,she feels great and is back to normal. should increase dose to 2.5 lantus instead of 2? or should i open a new lantus pen and try some fresh insulin?

We really rely on spreadsheet data to see the kitty's history before giving dosing advice. Are you considering getting a SS set up? Also, your best place to get Lantus dosing advice is on the Lantus and Levemir forum. It's a large group with a lot of very experienced people. I recommend that you post there. You want to get her down into good numbers ASAP because of the DKA episode.
