Hello there all.

So here we are - 7 weeks post DX and 9 days with no (canin)insulin. Happy, healthy, slightly bolshy Mootle.

I just wondered what sort of numbers should be expected from a 'diabetic' cat who is not using insulin? Monty is generally between about 5 and 7. Is that OK or should it be lower as I read that a 'non diabetic' cat's normal range is between 2 and 4.

Thanks!

Hi Catherine,

Your situation is truly blessed: And one that I've only been able to dream of for my cat....for the past five and three-quarter years, two weeks... and 5 days...(she sighs, wistfully....). Although I don't regret a moment of course. ;-)

Those numbers you have are wonderful. Open up the champers and please save a (very large) glass for me.

The definitive 'normal numbers range' seems to vary a smidge here or there depending on whose account you read, but my understanding is that between 2.4 to 6.8 is a pretty normal range, but 'every cat is different!' and I think that range will stretch in both directions....

The numbers are fine. Be happy. Very happy. But check often because sometimes remission only lasts for weeks or months. And never, ever, EVER feed your cat any dried food..... dancing_cat dancing_cat dancing_cat

Please do continue to read FDMB and post here to encourage people, especially those new to feline diabetes, and especially too those on (the dreaded) Caninsulin!!!

Catherine - yes, these numbers are lovely. We don't really know whether to term Monty a diabetic cat or a non-diabetic cat - he may have been diabetic when he was on dry food, and/or he may have had an infection or something which contributed to his high numbers - maybe he just has diabetic tendencies. In any case, it's wonderful that you've got to this stage and long may it continue. I'd still continue to test for a while, to be on the safe side, as if he does start getting high numbers again you want to be on it quickly.

As Eliz says, open up the bubbly!

Great job!

Diana
