Numbers are steady but no remission?

My sugar cat, Sylvester was diagnosed dec 5/2019. He started on 2 units of prozinc 2x daily. I tested his blood glucose last week and he got readings of 3.2 and 6.7 at +6 and +8.5 post insulin. A call into my vet said to do 2 units in the morning and 1 at night and then retest 5 days later. I retested today and got the following:

+6 hours 2.6
+7 hours 2.3 (given higher carb wet food)
+7.5 hours 2.2 (given higher carb wet food with a little honey)
+8 hours 3.2 (given higher carb wet food with more honey)
+8.5 hours 6.4
+9.5 hours 9.9
+12 hours 7.8
*no insulin given*
+24 hours 10.6
+48 hours 10.5
+ 96 hours 10.1

The vet has been awesome about helping me with his readings and giving advice. They said no insulin and retest Monday and call numbers in.

I know he isn’t in remission as his numbers aren’t low enough, but what is going on here?!!! His numbers are too low to give insulin, but it’s not remission. Could this possibly be a “normal reading” for him?

thanks!

Hi Holly and Sylvester and welcome.
It's great you are testing the blood glucose levels. It is the only way to keep Sylvester safe.
2 units is too high a dose for Sylvester. He is dropping too low.
One unit would have been a better starting dose for him.
You are correct, he is not quite ready to come off insulin yet. We need him to get into lower numbers before stopping insulin so he has a strong remission.

I do not use Prozinc so I will tag @MrWorfMen's Mom (another Canadian) to help you with the dosing.
In the meantime while you are not giving any insulin, I would recommend you test for Ketones, as they can form in diabetic cats' blood if they are not getting enough insulin, or not getting enough food, or they have an infection or inflammation. You can test for this easily by going out and buying a bottle of Ketostix from a pharmacy. Then collect a urine sample from Sylvester, then dip a test strip into the urine and then read the result against the colours on the side of the bottle exactly 15 seconds later. Anything above a trace needs vet attention. And any ketones at all indicates you should be getting back onto the insulin.

In the meantime, do you think you could set up a spreadsheet we have and put in all the data you have now please? That would be a tremendous help both to you and to us.
Here is the link below. If you have any trouble, ask for help setting it up.
What you could do in the meantime, while you are waiting for @MrWorfMen's Mom to come online to help with dosing, is to test the BG level before you feed in the morning and evening, then feed Sylvester, then test the BG level 3 hours later. If his pancreas is kicking in, the BG level should be lower after food.
Are you feeding several smaller meals during all the cycles?
Keep asking lots of questions
