Numbers all over the place

Hi Everyone,

Back again after more cat chaos (upper respiratory virus and ear infection in one of my non-diabetic fur babies). On a very happy note, Prince's went in for a check and his liver and ALT levels look good, less inflammation, and he has gained weight! So no more liver problems and hepatic lipidosis! :-D

However, I continue to be confused by his BG numbers. His nadir doesn't see to be at +6. Instead, his lowest numbers have been right before his shot. ? And then he seemed to be pretty stable in the 200-300's, and then all of a sudden dropped to his lowest at 92 (pmps reading), after an amps reading of 460!?

Not sure if this is something to do with an insulin depot, which I don't fully understand. It doesn't seem to be a bounce. In the meantime, I'm afraid to leave him because what if he randomly drops too low again?

Would anyone mind taking a look at his recent spreadsheet numbers and providing some insight? If you think you know what might be going on, let me know, because I sure don't!

Thank you again!

Hi Emily!

nice to see you and Prince back! it takes a lot more than a month to figure out how to read their numbers - don't feel badly that it doesn't make sense to you yet. it took me about 6 months to be able to see when punkin was bouncing - which is what Prince is doing right now.

When they bounce it kinda runs over the normal lantus cycle. So instead of seeing a nadir somewhere mid-cycle, the hormones and sugars released in the bounce dominate, if that makes sense.

When Prince hit the 90's yesterday, it was in the evening because he was coming down from a previous bounce. He was at 460 at amps, then straight down the whole day. He cleared that bounce when he hit the 90's.

Then he went straight up into the next bounce, which didn't take many hours to hit the 400's, did it?! he's very unaccustomed to the green numbers. I think you'll want to hold the 2.50u dose for a few more cycles and see if he gets back into green again.

You've got some really big blank areas in his spreadsheet from amps to +6 on most cycles. It's possible that he's diving down in the first few hours after his shots and then soaring up. If there is any way you can just vary the times of the testing to sprinkle numbers in the wide open white areas, that can really help us see the picture better of what is happening. you don't necessarily need to test MORE, just vary the times.

For now, it may take him as long as 3 days from last night to clear this bounce. here's an explanation on it: New Dose Wonkiness - look at the second post in the thread about bouncing.

I think many people expect their kitty's nadir to be a +6. Unfortunately, our cats don't read the Lantus "rule" book and even if they did read it, they'd ignore it. After all, they're cats! Only some cats have their nadirs somewhere close to the middle of the cycle. Others have early or late nadirs. Gabby, for example usually has her nadir at +3 or +4 -- except for those cycles when she doesn't. The nadir is a moving target. The best you can do is have a rough idea of when Prince's nadir usually falls.
