We are heading to the vet this morning in a few minutes. Trouble breathing, been up since 330 with him. I dont want to take a chance of leaving him all day like this.

AMPS is 417, which is expected because he was 164. He ate sometime through the night but hasnt this morning and I need to head out the door with him in a few. Not sure whether to give him a dose? I'm sure he'll spike when he gets to the vet and not sure if he'll eat.

Morning,
If you are heading out the door now to the vet the Prozinc won't kick in till 2 hrs. The vet can administer a dose there upon examination of Nudderbaby. I would probably wait till I get there if he is not eating. They can determine the dose to give with that information.

I just got off the phone with the vet and I am pissed and bawling.

They didnt listen to anything I told them when I took him in this morning.

They said his BS were 509. I told them they were 417 before we left and that he didnt get a dose but had eaten overnight.
I also told them he hadnt eaten yet this morning or had his dose and the last couple of days he's gotten .6 or .4
and done well. They gave him 2.5 u on an empty stomach. I flipped out.

I told him I switched to canned food before I left and gave them 3 cans of food. When I called
He asked if I was still feeding him the Purina DM dried . Really? Did you listen to a word I said? No because when I was in the room I heard them all making a big deal about me canceling his appt last week.
He also said he's lost .6 lbs since the 14th and thinks he needs to be on a longer acting
Insulin such as Lantus.

So I brought him in for breathing issues, what have you done for that?

He said well his Eosinophils are elevated to 910. I asked what they were when he came in on the 10th. THE SAME! I said back then that he was coughing. He was there for 4 days, why is this just now coming out.

I told them to have him ready by 5 because he's coming home with me. If he doesnt bottom out at 6 hours!

I am going for a drive to calm down

Tammie, I am so sorry this happened. I do not understand vets like this. Nudderbaby is your cat, not theirs. They are employed by you. They should be willing to listen to your ideas and to be a partner in his care.

So many people go through this same thing . (read about Charley's vet visit on her thread). All I can think is that it is ego. I was lucky. My vet didn't have a lot of experience but she was willing to listen and learn and work with me. Now she recommends wet low carb to all her patients.

If you decide you need to change vets, you could post your city and state on Health and see if anyone has a FD friendly vet in your town.

Oh Tammie,
I am so sorry
Poor Nudderbaby, please just pick him up and remember that he will still be sensitive tonight to all the insulin
he is not used to that high of a dosage
and he will need to detox from that dry food
I am so sorry, all that hard work you have done over the last week or 2
Hang int here and please find a new vet
Obviuosly that vet can not be trusted
I am so sorry, I hope and pray he is ok

Thanks Guys. Sorry to blow like that. I need to find a vet here that can do this. Im definitely going to be doing my research

I went to the hospital to visit my friend who had a stroke and that put things in perspective. Many people have it much worse than us.

Hi Tammie, I'm replying from a cell phone so pls overlook any errors. I *had* to reply to this because I can relate to your experience! My vet was crappy too. Or should I say, my OLD vet because I kicked them to the curb! They have forgotten that YOU employ THEM. You have received good vice on this thread but I wanted to add something. I ALWAYS tell the vet that they need to consult ME before administering any dose. Point blank period. My old vet would have slammed Jax with 3 units without blinking. Imagine the look of sheer astonishment on their faces when the assistant told me that the vet would be with me after giving the dose and I responded, No..he will be with me NOW, talk to me NOW, and not give ANYTHING to MY cat without MY say so.

Im sorry you went thru what you did, but know for next time. I promise, with the right vet, you will feel that u have a partnership.

Tammie -

So sorry you got this response (or lack thereof) from the ones you trust w/ Nudderbaby's care. It's terribly upsetting to hear all these things that they failed to do/listen to. Please indicate where you are either in your user control panel - or in a post - or start a new post entitled "Seeking new vet in XYZ city" and see what you come up with. Good luck!

I think it was Charley's posts that had some great questions to ask (via phone) when you're interviewing for a new vet. Will see if I can find them & send.

Lu-Ann

I don't have any advice for you, I'm Charley's mom Michelle. Just wanted to extend a virtual hug to you. I had my meltdown Friday with the same crap from our vet. I mailed him a letter detailing my questions and I'm giving him the opportunity to respond before I take my business elsewhere.

I really appreciate all of your support.

He did say the tyical line of treatment for his condition is steroids. By this time I was already hot and said You Will Not Give Him Steroids!!!

I havent been able to function all afternoon. There is a vet jusy across the yard from where I work. Im going to call them. The only bad thing is 2 hours in the car for him.

My boss and I were talking and she said she was able to train her cat to ride in the car and even made her a small poopy box for the floor of the backseat. Now that is Love ;)

Im heading out in a few. I hope they are ready for me because Im good and mad now.
Im sure the lack of sleep the last 2 weeks doesn't help.

My Kitty rides GREAT in the car. When Kitty was first dx, I didn't go anywhere -- because I didn't think I could take Kitty in the car for the ride. After months of staying home, I decided I had to find a better solution. I have a second home about 2.5 hours away and I knew Kitty could stay in the house with no problem, but how would I get her there? I bought a BIG crate and put in the back of my vehicle, with a big plush bed and a litter box. She did fine. Then one day, I decided I would open the crate's door to see what she would do....moments later, she was out of the crate and in my lap! I never use the crate now and Kitty and I go everywhere together! She sits in my lap and normally sleeps for a lot of the trips. I put a litter box in the floorboard, just in case! And, you should see the looks we get at drive-thrus!

It sounds like you need a new vet! There are vets out there that will work with you and appreciate your effort...you just have to find them!

Sorry about your experience today.

Tammie,
You probably said in another thread, but where do you live?

When you told them "no steroids" did they even know that steroids and diabetes don't mix well?

Carl

Well we're home.

Carl, I live in Northern Indiana about an hour south of South Bend.

Dx allergic bronchitis - suspected asthma
Albuterol syrup 0.35cc bid
His xrays were pretty full.

He hasn't been fed all day and when he got home an hour ago he ate like he's not eaten in days.

Our BS is 42. Lovely.

The vet says well I gave him a few of those DM's and he gobbled them up. I said, well yeah you havent fed him at all today, I would expect him to gobble them up.

He said he wanted me to give him Purina DM, whatever, I dont remember the amount because I said, it's not gonna happen. He's switched and he's staying switched. My other cat is pretty much switched and she is stayin that way too because I am not going through this again. We had a long discussion and he backed down and knew I meant it. He wanted me to start him on 1.5 in the morning but since I'm feeding wet he wants to start 1.0. He said if his numbers weren't back in the 300's by the time we checked at 715 tonite that he wants to look at a longer lasting insulin. Ugh...give the poor thing time to get back on track! We have bigger issues right now.

Then I asked for copies of his records before I left and the girl fumbled around like she couldnt find what I was asking for and I said, "I'll wait, go ahead and go find them".

 awesome!

42? Damn, how low did he go that you don't know about? Is the vet fired yet? I'll do a search and see if any members list Indiana as home. Maybe someone nearby can give you a vet clinic to contact.

Carl

:thumbup You're my hero! Good for you.

I don't understand his dose advice. Did he look at your spreadsheet? You are getting lovely numbers at .4. When was the 42? That usually signals a dose decrease.

Wow. Sounds like you raised hell.

Not happy that your baby's BG is 42 (hypo levels!) but confident that he is on the rise.
Sorry you had this experience. I guess you can help out the next new bean when you see them going through the same thing.

Priceless.

He told me he was at 50 at 3:30 and holding strong....I picked him up at 5:30, last test was run at 3:30, not sure how he determined holding strong. I tested him at 7:00 which was 12 hours past the 3.5 dose he gave him and got the 42.

Sue he wasnt even interested in looking at his past numbers that I had with me.

Poor thing just had a coughing spell. Hope we get to rest tonite @-)

Carl he did know that the steroids arent good for diabetics but earlier in the day when I told him no he said well I 'll have to talk to our other vet about what he wants to do. Sure, that tells me everything I need to know, right there.

My daughter is going to contact her vet tomorrow and I'm going to make some calls. First question is what type of diet do you feed your diabetics? Dried? Click...

Not sure if any of you have used this but he put a gauze with phermones in his cage and he didnt meow once.

I have a bottle of that and will be putting it to good use in the future.

Glad you are able to keep your sense of humor. Still cannot believe he gave 2.5u when you said he was on a .4/.6 dose. Utterly shocking. Hope Nudderbaby doesn't liver dump but that probably isn't likely. How low was the low? Craziness!

Wait...they gave 2.5 or 3.5???

Maybe Ginny can use some of the guaze for Alex! She tried calming collars.....no luck!

Good For you on Getting the Records! :-D

Lisa, it was 2.5 not 3.5 and if I'm not a smartass about it now I'll just bawl and I hate puffy eyes.

He was ***** and giggles when he got home now he's laying in the middle of the kitchen. He did go over and eat some gravy FF I put out for him. In only dabbed some honey on his gums. An hour later we are at 83..whew

They said his BS were 509. I told them they were 417 before we left and that he didnt get a dose but had eaten overnight.

OMG. So Junior was 100 points higher at the vet. Stress probably, but I'm sure his meter is "more accurate" of course. So when he was holding strong at 50, what the heck would your meter have said? How low was he? Damn

Carl, I live in Northern Indiana about an hour south of South Bend.

There were three that said "Indiana" but none had posted since 2010. No "South Bend" either. Unfortunately, the majority on the members list don't list a location.

If you don't have any luck on the phone, post in Health with a subject like "Good vet in South Bend area?"

Carl

Yep and I told him it was from the ride. Funny, he rode all the way home and was 42 when we got here, hard telling where he was before that.

I'm reading the office notes from his initial visit for this because he said, well I know the other Dr. had a hell of a time getting him to adjust. You dont even want to know what it says.

Day 1 3:30 pm (439) gave 3 units
5:45 pm (351)

Day 2 AMPS (79) GAVE 3 UNITS!!!
Fed 1/4 c DM
12:15 pm (62)
2:45 pm (139) gave 3 units
Fed 1/3 c DM

Day 3 AMPS (427) gave 4 units
Fed 1/3 c DM - ate 1/2 immediately
No checks til PMPS
PMPS (297) gave 4 units
Fed 1/3 c DM

Day 4 AMPS (477) gave 4 units
Fed 1/3 c DM
11:30 am (228)
PMPS (164) gave 4 units
Fed 1/3 c DM

Day 5 AMPS (460) gave 4 units
Fed 1/3 c DM

He sent him home on only 1/4 cup DM and 4iu's...good grief no wonder he was a mess within a few days. He was probably already hypoing on Day 3

Did I mention our visit was $200 today.

Carl thank you for checking on that for me. I wasnt sure where to look. Ive done a lot of reading on here but still have much more to read. I dont know how I would get through this without all of you.

Good for you!
Very proud of you!
How is he now...what are his numbers looking like
hopefully he has come up

He's up to 83 as of 8 pm. He wanted to go out so I let him for a few minutes. He practically took a bath in his water bowl for some reason.

Oh that poor baby
Let him detox tonight
and I am sure you already know, he will probably be very high tomorrow
If you give insulin, just give a small amount as he will prbably be very sensitive
:YMHUG: :YMHUG:

For everything you went through today, you have come such a long way
hang in there tonight...and breathe...

Congrats to you for standing up to the vet (and the assistant!)

As for the drive - I had 2 cats my last year in college that rode with me 4 hours to my parents' house from time to time, and back & forth when I was visiting friends after graduation. They also rode with me several times from the IL/WI line to NC. Ronnie used to get carsick the first hour, (into a cup!), and was fine for the rest of the 20 hr trip. Elsie rode under the drivers seat, and promptly found her spot under the covers at the hotel. Litter box in back seat. No other issues. They put LOTS of miles on their kitty belts... and even went "to the Falls" - REALLY!!! - as in Niagra, after my sister's wedding!!! We did a 30 minute tour on Maid of the Mist and got back to find them ready to have more than a window cracked. Elsie lived to be 18, Ronnie (the tri-pod PTS w/ recurring cancer) so I'm guessing all the travel didn't hurt either!

Your kitty will adapt - and might even enjoy travelling! I had a friend who took her cat to the beach every weekend. She said the cat knew where they were better than a GPS (smell those fishies!!!). Rode on the back of the seat.

One word of caution, however. If your car has power windows, LOCK THEM!!! I drove to a friend's house once and Mardi enjoyed her seat on the passenger headrest until she decided to open the rear window at 60 mph in the rain! I grabbed her by the tail and she clung to my chest like glue for the rest of the ride! When we got to my friend's house, she didn't come out from behind the toilet for 3 days!!! Lock the windows!

Hey Tammie,

I'm really steamed on your behalf right now. I really just can't believe this vet still thinks he knows best about diabetic treatment after all the hell he's put you guys through. If I were you, I'd google the vet's name, and go to every link that has a spot for "review" or "comments" and describe what you've been through.

My vet started off not being the most up to date on diabetic care but she's been conservative about dosing recommendations, supportive of home testing, and willing to learn from my experience... and I consider that the important thing. I hope your daughter's vet works out better for you.

Scritches for Nudderbaby!

Lori

Thanks Lori. I'v always loved this vet until this. We have an appt Saturday with our new vet and I very hopeful about us working together.
