Nube here with diabetic Jesse

My wife and I are the maid and butler for 7 (used to be 8) ex-ferals that we have taken into our hearts. Jesse has just been diagnosed as diabetic and put on insulin 2/day. Jess was a 31# before dropping back to 25#. He is a big cat, head like a softball.
I have been the designated insulin giver. The vet started him at 4 units 2/day and increased it to 6 when his sugars was staying in the 400-500 range. It has been increased again to 8 after seeing a slight drop. I am now trying to educate myself on diabetic cats.

Welcome to the board, maid and butler. My husband and I are very familiar with those roles in our household. Jesse is getting a lot of insulin and I think more experienced and knowledgeable members than myself would like to know more information about this.

I think it would be a good idea to create a signature that will be appended to each of your posts, this signature contains information on the kitty, like name, age, weight, gender, diagnosis date, type of insulin, dosage, type of home testing meter, what kind of food you feed him, if there are other medical conditions or issues, or any medications given. It's also handy to put in a specific or general geographic location, (what you feel comfortable with) as sometimes time is a factor. W e have members from all over the US, Canada and the world. Then you don't have to repeat information and members don't have to ask or search for the information. Just select your user name in the upper right hand corner of the page, and then select Signature. This information can be updated or changed at any time.

Please also post specific questions in the Main Forum, more eyes to see and respond to questions and concerns.
 
When you're logged on look in the top right where your name is.
(This is with a mouse, I'm old school)
Hover over your name and different options will show, "Signature" is one of them. Mine is simple, just three lines. I believe each line can only be a certain length.
You can also click on "Personal Details" and on the left you'll see all the options available. Personal Details is where you can tell as much or as little as you want about yourself, your cat and your situation. Anyone who is a member can see this this so be aware of the privacy issue.
This is also where you can go into detail about your cat's age and previous medical issues, the kind of meter and insulin you use etc.
One thing I think is important is what time zone you're in. You may be looking for help regarding a problem late at night but if you're on the west coast
a bunch of people here may already be in bed. There is no official board, it's a group effort.

Txbiker, I did see your user name, I was just trying to be a bit humorous. Bombed,sorry.

It has been increased again to 8 after seeing a slight drop. That is a lot of insulin, and if you are going to be changing a diet to low carb that lowers blood glucose. Are you home testing yet? We changed Idjit's diet to all wet, low carb and we weren't testing like we should have been, and we were still giving insulin. Idjit had a hypoglycemic event, and although it was not critical, it could have been a different story. If Jesse has a low blood glucose level, you aren't going to know it and if you give insulin that could be a very dangerous thing for Jesse. I just don't want anything bad to happen to Jesse.
 
You need to get him off the rice food HOWEVER NOT without lowering the insulin dose and without home testing .

Many on this board use a human meter such as the Walmart Relion Micro or confirm. I have a video in my signature showing how I test my cat CC at home.
 
Thanks for the responses especially about not stopping carbohydrates without stopping insulin. I am not sure I am up to drawing his blood but I guess I will have to man up and just do it.

It's a tiny price to the ear... Not a blood draw. Takes less than a minute. No biggie. I have a video in my signature showing how I test my cat CC at home.
