Hello Lantus peoples! :D

I'm sorry if this is the wrong board. I'm anxious about this first shot and since this is the Lantus board, er one of two, I thought it might be better answered here.

I'm giving Cain his first dose tonight, but I have some questions. To keep to my newer schedule I need to shoot very soon, like in the next 5-10mins. 15 at most. Can the Lantus be shot cold out of the fridge or does it need to warm up? I ask this cause the pharmacist mentioned that it needs to be taken out of the fridge for a bit to warm up.

And I picked up 1cc 29g 12.7mm syringes. I asked for U-100 and got this. I'll order the syringes that are suggested, but could I use that to shoot one unit? I saw the great video linked on how to withdraw from pens.

Thank you for any help! And sorry again if these are dumb questions and/or I'm in the wrong section. :)

Hi Cain and Brownie

Those are not the correct syringes and you don't need or want to warm or roll the insulin. You need U100, 3/10cc syringes. I like the short needle and 1/2 unit markings.

Hi and welcome,
you are in the right place for Lantus.

Yes the insulin comes out of the fridge, you can hold the syringe in your hand for a minute or two to warm it a bit but you don't want to keep it out too long...

You also don't want to roll it, or shake it...
don't store it in the door... ( door gets too much action) make a little nest in the fridge, maybe keep it in a cup on the top shelf where it's less likely to get knocked around.

I'm going to ask someone else to answer the syringe question....
be back in a moment.

edited to add:
there she is.....
and she's already answered....
looks like you'll have to shoot tomorrow after you get the right syringes....

And always ask any question you need help with...

you can edit your post in the subject line... add an icon like a question mark... or say question.... when you need something answered sooner than later...
There is often someone on this board who can answer...most of the time.

hehe Sorry I should have put my real name in the sig somewhere. Narillan is fine. I run by pseudonyms so much nowadays. Though if y'all prefer real names, it's Jennifer. :)

I have the pens sitting on the second shelf in the fridge. I figured it would get the least movement there. Well once I warn my parents that it can't be moved much. And that's good that just hand warmth for a minute will work. Ok, I'll go tomorrow and request those syringes. If they don't have them, I'll check the other pharmacies in town. Wow the 1 ml mark is tiny. Well Wikipedia said it was marked in 10 unit increments so if I'm looking at this right, 1 unit is a tiny tiny thing. I don't think it's possible to eyeball that.

Thank you for the welcomes. Y'all are awesome and quick on those replies. :D And I don't know why I didn't think of a question in the subject line. Anxiety I tells ya. :)

yes.... 1 unit is a small amount...

just wait until you see the smaller doses that are given around here....

we do half units... and even one drop .....
microdosing.....

Jennifer

Most of us keep the insulin in a drawer. The temp stays a little more constant.

Unless he's really high and/or has an infection, I'd get the correct syringes and then shoot. Are you hometesting? We don't recommend shooting without testing first.

Yes I'm home testing. I got a number of 357 for tonight's test. Which was a pretty decent test tonight. I think he's starting to get used to it. Hopefully.

I'll have to see if there's a drawer not being used much. Not sure if I want to keep insulin in with the meat & cheese drawer. (It might not be labeled that, but that's what it's been turned into.)

I'll get the correct syringes tomorrow morning.

Wow micro-dosing. That must be tough to figure out.

Ok, 3/10cc 30g 8mm syringes have been purchased. I got a ten pack for now, and I'll order more from the links up there. Now to figure out where 1 unit is on this thing. I have the relion syringes.

Oh, that's neat with the calipers. I was wondering what people meant when they said they were trying to measure with calipers in their spreadsheet.

Hi Jennifer & Cain and welcome,

I wrap each of my insulin pens in bubble wrap and keep them in a small cardboard box. I keep the one I am using separate from the others, in its own little box. The box protects from jostling and also keeps the pen at a safe temperature. I put one of those little camping-zipper pulls with a thermometer on it inside the box, just to make sure that the temperature is safe (between 2 and 8 degrees Celcius; 35 - 46 degrees Farenheit).

Good luck with your first shot!

Welcome to Lantus Land - the best place you never wanted to be!!

Please let us know how we can help! The people here are incredibly generous with their time and their knowledge and we'll do our best to lend you and Cain the best of both.

When you have a chance, there's a wealth of information in the starred, sticky notes at the top of the board. (It's an overwhelming amount of information, actually.) They are a good place to help get you oriented.

Overwhelming information indeed. So many tabs open. :)

Thank you for all the welcomes. I feed Cain (and Brownie) Fancy Feasts classic pates and the occasional flaked fish & shrimp one. I was feeding them a few other flaked ones, like tuna and chicken & tuna, but I took them out cause while they were under 10% they were a little high. It was suggested by those on the health board that I do that and just stay on classic pates right now.

I did post some more questions under my post for Cain's amps number. Just feeling like I'm screwing up a lot of stuff. Cain's first shot was just given thirty mins ago so now I'm going to keep a close eye on him.

Ooh I have bubble wrap and I'm sure I have a small box around here somewhere. There just isn't a drawer that isn't used frequently that I can store them in. But the back of the shelves get lower flux. I had a drink sitting back there for months cause I forgot about it. One of the bigger containers was blocking it.

...drat. Time to go hunt down where Brownie is cause I'm late on her medication. Cain's taking up all the time lately. :)
