See his chart. I have not given him insulin this morning. I have just fed him 1/2 can Gourmet delight Heart Health. I have glucose syrup on standby. Can he just go cold turkey on insulin?

Next time, only give a couple tsps of high carb food. You don't want to fill him up in case you need him to eat later.

Has Zorro ever tested positive for ketones? That will impact the decision on dosing or not.

Great news on the ketones! Retesting is always a good idea too. Sometimes the test number can be wonky.

How long since you fed, and do you know the carbs % of the food? Are you home and able to monitor if you shoot today? Sorry for the questions. Again, factors in whether or not to shoot, along with that test number.

Ok glucose now 2.8 so gone up slightly. I fed him twice today, first time 2.5 hours ago and then 20 minutes ago. I believe both foods are negligible carbs (definately under 5%). I am home today for monitoring

If you delay another half hour, could you still shoot tonight 12 hours after that and be OK with the delay in your shot schedule. You can move shots back 1/2 hour once a day, or 15 minutes a shot. If you can't change your schedule, skip the shot. He will be high tonight, but safe today. If you delay the decision to shoot, you would want his numbers to be up quite a bit.

He's out of the danger zone now, but still on the edge. I would give him a couple tsp,of his regular low carb food and test again in half an hour. He has earned a dose reduction down to 0.75 units when you shoot next.

Thanks, yes I can delay half hour and retest and then do his next shot in 12 hours. So as long as he is going up still give him 0.75 unit? I don't have the half unit syringes so will have to try my best at 0.75

Without 1/2 unit marked syringes, you can count the number of drops in a one unit dose. Try getting a consistent sized drop so you get the same number of drops per 1 unit. Then load up one unit and squeeze out 1/4 of the drops.

Still not very high. Do you have high carb food around as well as the glucose? I might get some early tests in the cycle. The recommendation is to get a +1 and a +2 when you shoot your lowest number to date.

Sorry, didnt see the post above the last one. Yes I have some high carb food and I will get a +1 and +2 test and make sure he is ok

+1 is now 3.2 so going down again. Should I give him some higher carb food. I still have some royal canin diabetic pouches which seem to make his glucose go up

I mixed the high carb and low carb together. He has stayed at 2.9 last 1 hour (approx +2.5 after insulin shot), just gave him another spoonful of the mix

just gave him another spoonful of the mix

That's good....as long as he stays above 50 (2.8), he's doing fine!!

You should test again in 30 minutes and see where he's at

If he does drop below 2.8, go ahead and give him a teaspoon or two of the high carb food and test again in 30 minutes to make sure he's back above 2.8.

As long as he IS, test once more in 30 minutes and then again an hour late (so you're testing for 2 hours from the time you fed the high carb food)

IF he drops below 2.8 again during that 2 hours, you feed some more high carb food and that 2 hour time starts over again.

I can't stay and watch for you tonight, but as long as you have the high carb food (or Karo/honey/syrup) and plenty of testing supplies, you'll do fine!!

I'll tag @Tricia Cinco(GA) & Harvey ....she's usually on later at night (If she's on at all)

Those are some interesting numbers! Girlie used to do really fast, deep dives. Someone made a suggestion that made life really easy for us in these situations: Cats in the Kitchen pouches. Just cut the corner off and squeeze out the gravy. They range from 12% carb to 18% carbs, so it's a good range for MC and HC foods. It was so easy to just give her a tsp or two of this gravy to bring up her BG levels quickly rather than food, which would fill her up, especially as she was such a fussy eater: she'd fill up quickly and then not want to eat any more food, even if her numbers were low.

I hope you get the 1/2 unit syringes soon! They generally take a week or so to get to Australia. Am I right that you're in Australia? :)

The 1/2 unit syringes say they are on backorder, but it said on the email that back orders usually only take 24 hours and then its postage to Western Australia so hopefully not too long. His latest reading was 6.5.

No not a typo. Because I've only recently transitioned him to low carb I wasn't confident how low he would drop so wanted to be cautious. I know it's bad to switch it round too much but if you can't monitor it surely it's best to be cautious??. He is 15 this morning @ +9

They go all over the place when they first get on insulin, as far as I've seen, as they're bodies get used to insulin and lower numbers. Girlie was bouncing like a mad thing every time she went from black down to yellow, much less blue or green!

It took me ages to figure out what food did to her and which carbs to use when and how much. But Girlie was a special case, and we had to finally switch to Levemir, which works much better for her.

How old is Zorro?

He is 12 and been fit as a fiddle all his life except for 2 snake bites which he had antivenom and treatment for

Hi and welcome to FDMB. I am sorry I have only just seen the tag which was posted on Monday.
You have been given excellent advise and help.
Great to see you have transitioned to low carb food...and what a difference it makes to the BG levels!
I live in Sydney. If there is anything I can do to help please just ask.
