i took a sample of my diabetic in remission cat's urine tonight to test for glucose (negative) but the urine was brownish. i just treated her for 14 days for a bladder infection with zenequin about 2 weeks ago. like a complete idiot i threw the urine out instead of putting it in the refirgerator. she has been having chronic diarrhea for about a year and a half and has been on lots of treatment but none now. she is just on tapazole for hyperthryoid. i just got complete blood work done on her about a month ago and it was all normal. i just took her to the vet yesterday for an exam and he said he thought she looked good and didn't feel anything abnormal although about a month ago a different vet said that she thought her kidneys were enlarged but the kidney values were normal.
i guess i have to take her back t the vet tomorrow. she's under the bed right now. she's not acting too abnormally, eating and stuff but she might be drinking more. she usually doesn't go under the bed though. i told the vet she was drinking more and i was worried about her kidneys but she didn't suggest anymore testing.
what can brownish colored urine mean? does it mean there is blood in the urine? if so, what does that mean?
what test should i ask for tomorrow?
thanks. i am really scared. this just doesn't stop.

It could mean blood in the urine, so the infection may be back. Kidney stones or crystals are also possible. If she were my cat I'd take her back to the vet tomorrow. (and try to get a sample to show him!)

PS: 2 years ago I rushed to the ER because I had bloody urine. They never figured out what caused it, but guessed it was kidney stones and it never came back.

thx. where the hell should i take her though. pardon my language. a swear these local vets are all so bad it's unbelievable. i don't want to leave her all day but i work tomorrow so i maight have to esp if i want an unltrasound. i can't decide which clinic would be less bad.

so sorry your kitty is having a problem......
agree w/ others -- sounds like blood in urine.

I hope she gets an easy quick fix dx.
healing wishes.....

It also could be bilirubin in the urine. Bilirubin is a byproduct from the liver breaking down blood.

Normally, a tiny amount of bilirubin is excreted in the urine if any. If the liver’s function is impaired or when biliary drainage is blocked, some of the conjugated bilirubin leaks out of the hepatocytes and appears in the urine, turning it dark amber.

Is there any chance she is dehydrated & the urine is very concentrated because of that?

Update: now her urine is brownish. please help

went to vet yesterday. different one. she did urinalysis and blood work. very slightly anemic (29% low normal 30% red blood count i think, not sure). everythign else was pretty normal including liver/kidneys. urinalysis showed blood and a little protein and a little bacteria. i don't think there is any bilirubin or anything else. vet sent of urine for more detailed testing. doesn't know where blood is coming from but said not to be too worried right now. she ultrasounded the bladder. said she saw a small thinckening but consulted with another vet at clinci and he said it didn't look like much to him. anyway, she's have diarrhea again. i am going to call monday to get urinalysis results. if there is enough bacteria or whatever, she'll go back on an antibiotic. if not, i'm not sure. she said to get a full abdominal ultrasound on her in a month. i won't wait that long, maybe a week tops. and i'm going to make another run at going to a specialist i think even though this vet didn't suggest it yet. i am very worried about her. her diarhea is bad right now and other than b12 shots, she's not on anything for it.
i got permission to use bene bac which i haven't tired on her before but in light of the new blood in urine thing, i'm not sure if i should. could there be any reason not to start the bene bac in light of the fact that right now she has blood in her urine from an unknown cause? i would like to start it this weekend but now i'm not sure. isn't it just a probiotic? could there be any reason not to use it now? she's on tapazole too for the hypert.
i am really worried. right now she is stable but i don't want her to crash.
god i wish i lived in a big city. i would go immediately to a specialist. right now, i prob cant' get off work to go again for about 10 days.
any thoughts or advice appreciated.
i will try to post detialed lab reports tomorrow. too tired right now.
she seems ok, kind of lethargic. i just got home so i haven't had that much time to observe. id on't like having to undiagnosed, untreated illnesses going on at the same time. making me very nervous.
vet yesterday plan was to get full abdominal ultrasound in a month try to make her stick to hypoallergenic diet (nearly impossilbe, believe me i have tried) and wait for urine test to come back mon or tues to see if she should start antibiotic.
she said that sometimes cats with have blood in urine for reasons unknown and it's not a big deal. i personally don't agree with that, i mean, i am worried about it. she also said to hold off and going to a specilist right now. she said a 6 hour drive would be too stressful for her.
i am thinking she needs better medical care and that if i have to, i guess i am going to have to take her to seattle 6 hour drive.
i don't know what else to do.
thansk.

She may be lethargic because of the diarrhea. I know I feel wiped out when I've had it! Ask what to give her for the diarrhea when you talk to the vet tomorrow. Canned pumpkin maybe?

Bene bac doesn't seem to be anything that would be a problem with the urinary issue. The web says it's "A palatable, concentrated source of live naturally occurring digestive bacteria found in the intestinal tract. For any time an animal experience stress from changing nutritional or environmental conditions."
