November is Pet Diabetes Month

Hmm, well they conveniently have a picture of a home monitor but say nothing about using it. At least diet was kind of addressed - in a vague kind of way. Sorry I just have this cynic part of me that's hard to put into time-out.

At least it didn't say:
"If you are concerned about your pet having diabetes, please schedule your frutosamine test now!! We're offering 20% discounts this month!"
 
:lol: I guess I'm more of a cynic than you are, I was encouraged that they were endorsing treatment.

Last year when Harley was dx she told me I had two choices, PTS or try to treat. My original vet, who happens to be my soon to be EX daughter in law, has been very vocal about the fact that she thinks we are crazy to spend so much time and money treating these cats when there are so many healthy cats that need homes. She forbade me from home testing, she doesn't believe in my food choices, etc.

Recently we were having a conversation about feline diabetes and she told me that she just had to PTS her friends cat because they couldn't get him regulated, I said "why didn't you call me?" she stared at me blankly and said "why would I call you?"

She's also the one who insisted on me boarding him last June when I went out of town with her instead of where I wanted to board him, she insisted on updating his vacinations, picked at his teeth, gave him a shot of Convenia without telling me (I just read it on the invoice after the fact) and then gave him back to me diabetic again.

So you can see why I was wowed by this from Harley's new vet.

Oh look, now you got me started.

I guess it's nice it's on the radar screen to get a whole month in it's honor, though sad as that probably means it's a commonplace illness. Hopefully in 10/20 years people will look back and say "I can't BELIEVE how stupid we were" and the incidence will be down to just cats with a true medical leaning toward diabetes, not a bazillion cats who got there accidentally due to collective ignorance on food, etc.

Ok, soapbox moment over with. :roll: Getting some press is probably a good thing.
 
Sounds like progress to me--both with the vet and with the daughter-in-law! :lol: (She sounds like she should be the star of a movie about daughter-in-law from hell).

I'm a bit cynical too. How can you call something "on the rise" when in truth more and more people are just becoming aware of something that has been going on all along?

Oh well, at least they're trying.
