If you have a cat prone to ketoacidosis, catching it early in a blood test can be a lifesaver and well worth the cost of the strips, though I found them to be rather expensive.

As BJM said, it's always useful to have a blood ketone meter on hand for whenever ketones are suspected; they're much more accurate than urine test strips.
