I purchased the NovaMax meter recently. Does anyone else use this meter to test for keytones? If so is there a link you might have to better understand the readings as it should pertain to cats?
I tried the urine test strips with little success and ended up at the emergency vet. I thought my baby was very high when in reality he only had trace amounts of keytones.

The rough guidelines in the instruction manual should be fine. Normal cat and human glucose levels are about the same.

See also my signature link Glucometer Notes for some feline specific glucose reference ranges using human meters and what they might mean.

As crazy as it may be I plan on using the Alphatrac meter for the glucose readings. I stocked up on test strips for the Alphatrac meter when I received my tax refund. Based on current usage I should have enough test strips to last the next couple of months. I only have the NovaMax for the keytones. The NovaMax meter gives numbers for keytones vs.the color on the urine test strips. Which Spike has had a trace amount for a couple of weeks now. The meter currently has only 2 readings.1 for 1.91 when he was pretty sick and the today it was .4
Since the last three weeks we have had other health concerns I am wondering how to relate it to the traditional urine strips traditionally used. obviously we are heading in the right direction but I was wondering when I use the meter for keytone readings will it be directly related to how high his glucose levels are. For example if he has a reading over 400 on the glucometer will the keytone numbers also be higher. As I believe you were in the conversation a few weeks ago about his positive keytone reading on the traditional strips. I want to be prepared in the future.

The documentation for the meter should provide reference ranges for ketones; I would go by those because the normal glucose ranges are similar.

Urine ketones show up on average 5 days after the ketones show up in the blood. Ketones show up in the blood on average after 2 weeks of excessive glucose levels (ie insufficient insulin).
