Greylie is blind, 18 years old and has been very good about using the litterbox day and night. Suddenly at night he does his business on the floor even though he has a nice clean litterbox in the same place that it has always been. He uses it in the daytime without a problem. I don't understand this sudden behaviour. He has high blood pressure and hyperthyroid for which he takes meds. What could be wrong....

No changes at all he loves to eat the pee is the same and the weight too..I just don't understand that he goes to the litterbox in the day time and not anymore at night....

And... we also lived in Hawaii..... for 3 1/2 years.. lucky you to live there... I love it... we used to live close to Hilton Hawaiian in the first Condo every built in Hawaii.. 'Waipuna'.

Did you change the cat litter type? brand? A different smell or texture can put them off.

If not, time for a vet trip - could be a UTI or kidney issue.

Wendy

Same cat litter. He used to have some urinary infection and could not pee then there is good amount of urin now. He does have kidney problems I know he was diagnosed maybe it is getting worse now.

Since you said he's blind, maybe he has a harder time seeing at night... Hope it's not serious... When did you live in Hawaii? I've been here since 2005 and live in the Hawaii Kai area.

Hi Liz
Maybe he can see light a little. I would try a night light, just to see if it makes a difference.
Good luck and kisses to Greylie

Hi!
Is it possible that at night it's simply harder to get in the box because it's much cooler than during the day? He is stiff & his joints ache?
Best wishes, Sophie

Oh maybe so...Poor baby...Maybe try cutting down one side of the box?
Sending prayers for Greylie...and you too.

Will he sleep with a heating pad? Set on lowest setting and under his bedding? That might help.

EATA...OK I have confused Sophie with Sophia (Liz) wow for a minuet I thought Sophie had a Greylie too! :/ my bad.

Thank you so much for your help.... I am going to put a light in the hallway for him...He never did this before.. and I am going to see what I find tomorrow. There is a pee in the box today. I will let you know how things are going overnight.

I was thinking about what I said, him being blind and not seeing in the dark... :-D Is he completely blind or just has a hard time seeing? Regarding Hawaii, I retired from the Air Force and stayed here.

Some cats develop cognitive difficulties as they age. Is anything else unusual? Crying out at all?

Check my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools for additional assessments which may provide some clues to what is happening.

Thank you. I put a night light out and he had 1 poop and 2 pees in the box... I was really glad but still have to keep an eye on him because the hallway has been dark all these years and I don't think he sees anymore or less than he used to,. As far as sounds...... he is a howler....honestly day and night it sounds like he is in distress. I think it is partially my fault because I run imm. when he 'callss' he howls when he want to go to bed... he howls when he is eating and the food is a little in the corner and he howls at night... he howls.... real lould when he wants to get up at 6.30 am... He is not in pain....this is his way of communcating.... sometimes it sound like//// mom mom.... I swear... it has been like that a long time.

Thank you for all your help.

Dusty bones..... you are so lucky.... I love Hawaii... we were back in 2008. Kalakaua ave has changed so much.... with all those fancy stores... They were just building the hotels at Ft Derussy when we left... now it is so overbuilt and the view that we used to have is all gone.....

That is great to hear the nightlight worked...at least for last night. Maybe his eyesight has faded a bit more with getting older? Maybe it's disorientation? Whichever it is, hopefully the nightlight continues to help and no more peeing outside the cat box. :-D

The vet told me that 1 year ago that Greylie is totally blind and that he can't see a thing....I was shocked to hear that because he got around really well but the vet said that cats can adjust well..I hope the floor will be dry tomorrow... I'll gladly clean up.... just happy that my grey boy is still with me... PS I hope he won't go on the carpet... his sister Sophia did that and I can smell it...

There could be some temperature differences with and without lighting, depending on the intensity, as well as mild air currents and if dust gets on the bulb, a scent of heated dust.
