Member Since 2018
Hi. I'm new. Peanut has been suffering from multiple health issues lately so I wanted to share.

I adopted him at 3yo. He's 10yo now. He was about 22 pounds when I adopted him. He loves food. I gave him high protein dry food when I adopted him. He got a urinary blockage shortly after I adopted him. He's been on prescription Purina UR dry and wet ever since.

He started begging for food. Constant begging. I feed him 4 small meals a day as it is. But he's a big guy, so I just thought he loves food. I recently started giving him more of the dry food. I thought since it's prescription food it was okay.

Then he started drinking a ton of water. Again, I thought this was actually good since he bad a blockage before so more water is good.

He started peeing more. I assumed just from increased drinking. He started missing the litterbox by a few inches. I got him bigger litterboxes figuring he's too old or too big. It kept happening. I even found random wet spots on the floor a few times.

He's been tired and not playful. Not very cuddly either. I thought it's old age.

Then about 2 weeks ago, he got sick. 11 throw ups in 2 days! He couldn't eat without vomiting. He refused to eat. 3 days he couldn't keep anything down.

We went to the vet on day 2 of the vomiting because it was obvious something was wrong. He got blood work and urine tests. Both showed elevated glucose. He was diagnosed with pancreatitis. He He had fluid humps and anti nausea medication. Then he got antibiotics for a UTI. He goes back tomorrow for a 3rd round of blood work for diabetes.

It's been months of illness symptoms that I've missed. I have since started him on Tiki Cat food, 2 6oz cans per day. He wants more. I've got him some turkey liver treats too. He also eats some boiled chicken breast. I'm trying to keep his carbs as low as possible.

I got him a relion micro today. 2 hours after his lunch, it read 101. This number seems okay? I'm fully expecting him to be diabetic with the drinking, hunger, and peeing. The vet also said UTIs and pancreatitis come with diabetes. All signs point to diabetes. It's overwhelming. I feel terrible for missing the signs.

101 is in the normal range, not diabetic. Can you post his labs?

Okay. Thanks. I'll ask about his thyroid tomorrow when he has his blood test done. I'm happy his blood glucose seems good. Would a thyroid issue explain elevated glucose in his urine and blood? Or is that from stress? I will also ask for his lab results. They've just been telling me normal or not normal, but no number values.

101 bg is a good non diabetic number. Maybe a couple more tests at home to confirm. A lot of times when a cat goes to the vet their number goes up because of stress.

Glucose in the urine could be from a uti or many other conditions.

Definitely get a thyroid check. That can affect a lot of other stuff.

Glad you will be seeing vet again. Ive had a 21 year old cat with hyperthyroid and now Rusty with diabetes.Rusty had undiagnosed pancreatitis for a year. The symptoms, except vomiting, sound similar to symptoms both cat have had/have.

I asked for his previous blood and urine test results. I can see multiple abnormal levels. Maybe someone here can make more sense of it than I can. He just got more blood work done today so it'll be awhile until I get those results. His current total T4 is normal. I hope you can see the pictures with his lab results.

Hi & im sorry you have a sick kitty! I looked at the bw & maybe this is something that your vet has discussed with you. Creatinine level is very high which signals kidneys. It could be an infection, dehydration or something else. It sounds unusual though to be very hungry with these problems. It could be the cause of vomiting, drinking & urinating more. I hope your vet has already addressed this or maybe doing more tests to confirm. I’m not a doctor or nurse but I have had cats with kidney problems. I wish you all the best!

I'm not an expert but all this results look quite normal to me, his kidney function looks just ok Creatinine and SDMA test are within normal ranges not even stage 1, his blood sugar was a little bit high but since he was at the vet and with pancreatitis it may return to normal as soon as he is ok you can monitor him at home and see if he continues getting normal values like the one you posted or not ( the results you get at home for his blood glucose will be more accurate than at the vet because of the stress)

His creatinine kinase and ALT did came hi you may want to address this with your vet because I think this may indicate some sort of infection or could be as a result of the pancreatitis, dehydration or UTI, I'm not really sure about this but is worth checking it

His urianalisis did indicated that he may still have some infection, did your vet also did a culture? Is important to be shure and see if he doesn't need another round of antibiotics (UTI's can be hard to get rid of).

If you can you could also ask for an aldosterone level test is rare that they have a problem with this but when is not ok can cause hunger and still weigh lost, thirst and a lot of peeing just like diabetes and thyroid

The lab notes say his SDMA and creatinine are both within the reference interval which it says likely indicates his kidney function is good.

He did have a UTI at the time of these tests and I'm assuming it went undiagnosed for quite some time as I just thought he was occasionally missing the litterbox because he's big. He's been getting oral antibiotics twice daily and he's almost finished with that now. No accidents since starting those.

He's on a new food now. He went from the Purina UR wet and dry to Tiki Cat wet food. I'm hoping that better quality food might help.

I could give him some time on his new food and have them redo the blood work and urine tests to see if his results come in any better. I don't know if the pancreatitis and the long undiagnosed UTI alone could cause these results.

That's good you should get another urianalisis two weeks to a month after he finishes his antibiotics to make sure his infection is really gone

The change of food will benefit him if he's diabetic but even if he's not after all

I’ll have to get back with you later as we are out of the country and I just checked in today as I got a PM. However, we are headed out for the day right now. We will be back in the evening, which will be morning your time if you are in the US and I’ll take a look.

I appreciate your patience.

Thank you!!!

@Kait & Peanut ...sorry to just get back to you but we had very sporadic WiFi last night.

He definitely has pancreatitis. I’d keep monitoring the glucose. As it turns out with my Gracie, she had the symptoms of diabetes, spiked a glucose, came back to normal without insulin, and then a few weeks later her Bg went up and stayed up and I had to start insulin. So best to watch his BG.

He is hovering near anemia with that hematocrit of 31% (below 30% is anemia). His creatine kinase is a huge red flag and you might want to have some further tests done. A number that high is usually due to some muscle trauma which can include a heart problem. Is he part Maine Coone? While there are other things that can cause the CK to be so elevated, I would talk to the vet about retesting and/or doing a CardioPet proBNP blood test to see if it indicates potentially a cardiomyopathy. If that test is abnormal, then you can get an echocardiogram. A negative test doesn’t rule out all heart issues but is pretty reliable when it comes to cardiomyopathy.

His AST is mildly elevated and could be linked to the pancreatitis so I’d monitor it. His kidneys are fine and he’s concentrating his urine as he should be.

I wanted to come back and give an update. I know its been awhile but we just got Peanut's diagnoses yesterday. He finished his antibiotics last week and over the weekend he has left a few small wet spots on my floor. On Sunday, he left a huge pee puddle on my floor, so I knew he was still suffering.

I took a urine sample in for testing again. He tested high for glucose in his urine again. His vet said he is not diabetic as his blood glucose is not elevated. She has diagnosed him with Fanconi syndrome. She is researching it now to see what we can do. He has an appointment next Monday with a different vet to get a second opinion and hopefully we can get a treatment plan from at least one of the vets. It's rare in cats and is often misdiagnosed and mistreated as diabetes.

Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate everyone here!
