Not responding to insulin

Hi everyone,
My baby boy (Felixou) is back on insulin after almost a year in remission.

It has been a month since his diabetes came back. He is now at 3units of lantus-twice a day and the BG values are still around 18-20.

I am not sure how to interpret his BG values as it looks like his body reponds to the insulin dose only for 3 days and then his BG get back to higher level.

More specificaly, at the beginning (January 9th) his BG values were around 19 and we gave 1 unit-twice a day. No change. The vet suggested to increase at 2 units-twice a day. BG decreased at 14. Three days later, BG increased at 20. We gave 2,5, then 3 and same pattern.

A week ago, he had blood test and got checked for urinary infection and everything was normal.

What could explain this situation?

Sorry I don’t know but I’ll bump your post to the top.
 
It will help if you'll start keeping track of your test numbers on our spreadsheet. Are you home testing or were those numbers all done at the vet's office?

We are very data driven here and really need to see how things have been going before we can give much in the way of helpful advice.

That being said, it's possibly your vet has increased your insulin too much, too fast. We only do increases in .25 to .5 unit increments because just a tiny difference can make huge differences in the numbers.

Too much insulin can look like not enough! (strange but true)

A 2nd remission is harder than a first one, but by home testing and doing increases in the right amounts, we may be able to get those numbers down
 
Like Chris said, it's possible he's getting too much insulin.
I'm also wondering how often you tested when he was in remission? Is it possible that he's been out of remission for a while?
 
I do home testing - each day 3 to 4 times a day.
We increased slowly - .5 units
Your spreadsheet is not adapted to the unit I use which is in mmol/l.
I do have an Excel sheet where I write all his numbers, mood, quantity of food and unit injected. I make a curve every two weeks.

There is a tab for mmoL. I am in Canada and use it.

Take a look at my ss. Do you see there are two tabs? Click on the blue line in my signature.

You enter the preshot reading into the first cell on the left hand side before the blue column (its purple on the US sheet so you’ll know you have the right one). In the blue column enter the dose you gave. The numbers along the top that say +1,2,3 etc are hours past the shot. So if you test three hours after the shot enter the number in the +3 column in the same row you’re in. The color coding happens automatically as the sheet uses conditional formatting. Does that help?
