Not responding to increase PZI Dose

Hello,

I wanted to see someone's thoughts on my kitty's BG. I had added a Pet Wellness BG supplement drops on 2/4 thinking this would help his numbers but as you can see they only got worse. Since stopping the drops his numbers have stayed high even with the increase dose.

His behavior is very healthy and he's not drinking excess water or anything... not sure what to think perhaps it was a coincidence that I added the supplement when he stopped responding.

Should I ask the vet about switching insulin?

Hey Tanya, you have similar problems as I do. I can't get Pooper's under 300 and when back on the 25th or so I seen the 24 my jaw about dropped! That was dangerously low and he has also had very good numbers in between. Is his dental work up to date and good? I know with Poopers I am having his dental work checked Saturday morning to see what is going on since friends on here have said dental problems can contribute to higher numbers and not getting regulated. What cat food are you feeding Mr. Kitty? Just Friskies Pate and FF classics? You have obviously been on the dose longer than me so the give it more time probably doesn't imply. Maybe the insulin isn't the right one for him or he has an underlying problem elsewhere. I hope our cats can get regulated soon and start showing happy numbers!

Yeah I might go ahead and get his teeth cleaned because I can't explain how he won't budge. He gets 1.5 cans of FF Classic 2x's day, and a few bites of tuna when I give him his shot (makes him oblivious to the needle lol). I hope the same for you! At least he is very happy lately and back to himself, despite the higher numbers.

He certainly had better numbers at lower doses earlier this year. If he were mine, I think I'd stick with a dose (like the 3.5 ) for 4-6 cycles and then raise again, maybe by .25. This pattern does suggest something else is going on, as he was responding well before. Maybe teeth or an infection?

Getting more numbers might also fill out the picture. When you can, try getting a curve (getting tests every 2-3 hours during a day.). It doesn't look like there is an opportunity to drop into a lower range, but more numbers might help you figure this out. Maybe his lowest point is around +6/7 and you are missing it?

OMG. Just found out through the fb board I'm using the wrong needles!! I didn't know. It's u40 insulin and I bought u100 needles 1/28/15!! I'll have him back regulated in no time!
Aha.....
Mystery solved. :cat:
Looking forward to seeing those numbers get back on track.

We have a conversion chart you can use so the U-100 syringes aren't a waste. They do let you dose in finer amounts of 0.2 units at a time.
Basically, each 0.5 mark on a U-100 syringe equals 0.2 units of a U-40 insulin.

Where can you get the U-100 syringes that show .2 units? The ones I have only show single units and there is not much room between the lines.

You did not understand what I wrote. Let me try again.
U-100 insulin has 100 units per mL
U-40 insulin has 40 units per mL; it is 40% of the concentration of U-100.
If you use a U-100 syringe to measure a U-40 insulin, you must adjust the value on the tick marks by multiplying with 0.4
Like this:
0.4 * U-100 tick mark = dose of U-40
0.4 * 0.5 = 0.2 units of U-40
0.4 * 1.0 = 0.4 units of U-40
0.4 * 1.5 = 0.6 units of U-40
0.4 * 2.0 = 0.8 units of U-40
0.4 * 2.5 = 1.0 units of U-40

OK. That's what I thought from yesterday. For example, I'm going to increase the ProZinc U-40 dose to 1.5. That would be about 3.5 on the U-100, correct? But it seems even more difficult to measure .5 on the U-100 syringes I have than the U-40. Am I missing something?

You aren't missing anything. If you use u40 insulin with U100 syringes, it's easier to dose in 0.2 increments, that's if the U100 syringes have the half unit markings. If they only have whole unit markings, then it's easier to dose in 0.4 increments, and the 0.2 would be eyeballed between the whole unit markings.

So I should probably look for U-100 syringes with half unit markings! The ones I have only half 1-unit markings. Thanks for clearing this up for me before I start raising Zoey's dose!

I shouldn't think so. I can't recommend a source for you because I live in the UK. I'm sure that if you post a thread on Feline Health asking where to buy syringes you'll get an answer in double-quick time. :)

I get my 3/10 mL, U-100, 30 gauge, short needle syringes at WalMart. I believe all of their 3/10 syringes have half unit markings.

Thanks, I just went there to buy a new meter and I found them. I just posted a new thread in the main forum because my 2 meters are reading very differently and I'm not sure which to believe.

Meters in the US are allowed to read +/- 20% from what a lab would get. This means that if 1.2* the lower test winds up greater than 0.8 times the higher test, the values may be considered equal.
