The vet had said to test Pumbaa for the first time one week after the vet tests, as diet change alone would not show immediate results. I'm getting a head start on this because I understand that getting a good blood draw initially can be difficult. I just tried for the first time and failed to get enough blood for the test, even though I used the warm rice-sock, etc. But I think the next time will be easier.
It's hard to catch Pumbaa before eating, since I am making sure he has food available all the time right now. Although I must say that he's no longer eating non-stop, and has put on a little weight (.14 lbs.) since last Monday.

If you can't test before eating, then get tests in at different times, again you want to see how he is doing with diet alone.,
It is possible for some cats to change diets and not need insulin at all, or only need it for a short time.

Very sensible attitude re the testing and so glad you're not stressing about no luck the first time. Don't forget to give him a little low carb treat even when you're unsuccessful many people find that testing time becomes a good time from the cats perspective because of the treat that follows ;-)

Vyktors Mum: Thank you! Due to these boards I wasn't stressing about getting a good bead the first time around! And yes, treats before and after the testing. I've been giving him sharp cheddar cheese, which he loves, and pray that cheese is still considered low carb for my furry friend.
