Kirby was 417 just a few min ago!
I gave him Fancy feast pate.. had to help him eat it. Gave his 2 units but it didn't go in. I could see, feel&smell it. I tried again, same thing! WTF??? Oh I am beside myself here. Wasting insulin. I don't have the time for ss yet everyone...I'm sorry but I'm dealing with more than the cat...Other family members are sick..I'm sick. Oh IDK what's going on here.

Katie - if you give one fur shot - you should not reshoot - you never know how much actually did get in - did you give him a second shot?

Yes..I had to. That one didn't go into him all the way either...it's the PZI. IDK why this is happening. I'm feeling like I am gonna lose him. But I can't! He's my Buddyhead. The 6th is when I lost my last boy. I'm so scared right now. Please help...or ask others too. I'm not seeing this "same thread"people have asked me to go back to instead of a new post.

Katie, we all have given fur shots and it's best NOT to shoot again since you don't know how much actually got in. Take a deep breath, it will be ok. Kirby will be ok. Please listen carefully to what @Sue and Oliver (GA) tells you about dosing, and slow down a bit. It takes weeks, even months to get diabetes under control.

@Katie&Kirby take a deep breath and relax, the first few weeks of dealing with this are horribly stressful. 417 is an ok number when you are first starting out and everything you do feels stressful and sends you into a panic. We have all done fur shots and missed doses. My kitty was bony and poorly when she was first diagnosed and I ended up crying at the vet because I didn't think we were getting anywhere - and this is from a person who knows a lot about diabetes which in some ways made it more scary. She looks like a different cat now and is happy and healthy but it has taken three months to get to this stage. It is early days and you need to get into a routine and ask for help when you are not sure - there is always someone on this board who will have an answer for you. I am not familiar with your insulin or the food available in your part of the world but others are and can help you with that. The important thing when starting out with insulin is to find the dose which is right for your kitty and it can take a long time to figure that out, I am still adjusting doses but have had to make several other changes along the way.

When she was first diagnosed I was pretty much free feeding as she had lost so much weight and didn't worry too much about perfect numbers, but now I have her on a strict 12 hour feeding regime, she is on a specialist food to help her liver and pancreas problems but any low carb wet food is fine for most kittys. She kept throwing up in the early hours but that has more or less stopped now. Just feed her the same stuff consistently. I do have her on a 12 hour regime for her insulin, some days her numbers are better than others but then she hasn't read the manual so as long as she is fine I don't tend to get too hung up on the numbers. If you can start a spreadsheet that would be really helpful as it is colour coded to make things a bit easier for you to understand the numbers and look at trends, someone can help you with that and if you put the link in your signature we can refer to it as and when. Can you also update your signature so we don't ask the same questions over and over, if you can add some basic information as we have it helps with giving advice.

It would help us to advise you better if you can answer a few questions for us.
What are you feeding and how much and when?
How much does your kitty weigh?
Has Kirby ever had ketones?
What meter are you using?

I do understand the anxiety but we have members on this board who have very bad anxiety and are managing their kittys just fine so if they can do it so can you. They have just needed a bit more support along the way. You have started home testing which is great, you have managed to give shots, so that is two big things out of the way already and you are well on your way. You can do this.

Sheba perfect portions...weight 13 lbs...PZI at 10 am &10 pm. Never did ketones..RELIOn confirm meter. Will do ss tonite.

I'm trying and crying. Why won't it go down? I'm gonna retest real soon and post it. Thanks so much.

It takes time, the insulin does not start to work as soon as it's injected. How is Kirby feeling? Is he eating well?

I think Marji sent you a private message. Look under your name on the top right hand side of the page. You'll just need to give her some info and she can set up the spreadsheet and put it in your signature so we can see the updated version each time you post.

Everyone has given a fur shot - even people who have been doing this for years. It is likely some insulin went in, so don't consider giving any more insulin. So I'd suggest you take it easy today - maybe get a number in that 5-7 hour time frame just to see if some insulin went in and we'll regroup tonight after you get a preshot number.

You are getting great advice about being patient and breathing. One number is just one number; one cycle is just one cycle. This is a process and it will take awhile for his body to learn how to use the insulin effectively and for us to fine tune the dose. He will be okay while you do this.

I just read your other thread. Did you give more than one dose this morning? If so, how much total.

Please let's try to keep all your info/responses on this thread. When you come back to a thread that has a little blue dot in front, it means someone has added a response to your thread. Then, at the top, under your title, there will be the yellow box with unread. If you have read all the new posts, the yellow box won't be there.

Don't worry about copying and responding to a particular person. Just answer the questions and we will figure it out.

Just offering support Katie. You can do this. Sadly it doesn't happen over night. Since you are sick yourself it is a good time to rest up. Kirby is okay for the moment.

I don't see this stuff about the threads...I'm sorry to be doing this wrong. I'll thoroughly look again. Gotta check his by level right now. He's just been laying down which he usually does anyway during the day. SS tonite I promise!!!!
I have a brain injury and am having a hard time absorbing all this. My short term memory is BAD! I'll post his # in a few. Tks!!

346 so at least it's down a little bit.

Katie, you are using a smartphone/tablet right to react to this forum?
What you can do to track all the reactions, you can click on the top right of the page on Alerts, and then on the bottom right of the pop up screen you see 'alert preferences' click on that one, and click all the things you want to have an alert off so you get an email notification when someone comments on your thread. That way you will not miss any comment, and you don't have to search for it. You can just open your email and click on the link, it will automaticely send you to the newest comment.

Okay, I think I see what is confusing you. Let me know if what I say makes sense. This post that you are reading is part of what we call a "thread". When you post a question, we answer on that thread...so you see the answer under the question you asked.

To keep things simple, it would be best if we stayed on this thread. So when you have something to ask or something to say, just click on this thread and go to the bottom. Then type what you want in the box and click Post Reply. That way, we will stay on this one thread for now, and we can make sure we get all the information you're giving! Make sense? If it doesn't just say so. How to use the forum shouldn't stress you out...you've got enough on your plate!

Remember Katie, Kirby isn't going to be regulated overnight. It takes time. If you give a fur shot (where the insulin doesn't all go in) don't give another shot. More than likely SOME got in, and it's dangerous to give more.

What questions do you have, Katie? I know you're stressed and afraid, but we've all been doing this for years. We get new folks all the time who come in, spend some time learning, and get their cat regulated or even in remission. It can and does happen all the time. We are here to help!

Hi @Katie&Kirby I understand about brain injury so you know for yourself that the way of dealing with it is to get into a routine and to write things down. Kirby needs routine to manage his diabetes, this is new for you so you are finding it difficult. I understand that. Can you write down a list for yourself and put it on the fridge or somewhere you have easy access to it to remind yourself when to do things and what to do, for example something which shows the time and what you need to do at a certain time. I have hypo instructions on my fridge together with the phone number for the vet and the address and number of the emergency vet as I don't want to be searching for them if I need them in a hurry. My morning would look like this:

06.30 get up and check blood sugar, add number to the spreadsheet and the dose to be given
06.45 feed cats (one tin for Cappuccino, who is fed separately as she has special food)
06.50 draw up insulin and leave on the counter
07.15 check cats have finished eating, let Cappuccino out of her room and give insulin
and similar in the evening.

On days when I have the day free I will do the extra readings (work does get in the way), see my spreadsheet, and every week to few weeks I do a curve to check how she is doing and if I need to change the dose. She throws me odd numbers at times for no apparent reason so I tend to do a curve when she is showing steady numbers. For now you are looking for steady pre-shot numbers, they will vary day to day which is where the spreadsheet comes in as after a time you will begin to see patterns which will help us advise you. Slow and steady is the way.

Hopefully this will help with your posting problems....When you come back to see if someone has answered you, look for this

go to first unread.PNG

That will automatically take you to the first post that you haven't already read already in your same thread
