not drinking post DKA

Hi, I recently brought my cat home this weekend from the hospital after a week of trying to get rid of his ketones. Since arriving home, he has not been drinking from his water bowl as much as he used to and it seems as though he is barely drinking any water at all.

However, he has always liked to drink water from a spray bottle and he follows me around whenever I pick up the bottle so I have been hydrating him with the spray bottle in the morning and nights, but obviously this cannot be a long term solution. Is there any way to entice him to drink more water from his bowl?
 
Can you turn the tub on a nice slow drip and see if that interests him? Cats love running water like nothing else.

I’m so glad you have found us and I’m sorry your kitty has had DKA
I’m not sure what the vet told you to do but below is a list of very important things you need to be doing to help your kitty recover from the illness
As far as getting more fluids into him, have you tried adding some warm water to the food….about a teaspoon each time.
  • you need to give one and a half times as many calories as he/she normally eats. Offer snacks every couple of hours during the day and evening as well as the 2 main meals. Food is like a medicine and helps keep ketones away. If your kitty won’t eat the low carb food, feed him whatever he will eat as eating any food is better than not eating,
  • Don’t skip any doses of insulin as insulin helps keep ketones away. If the BG is not high enough to give the dose…stall, dont feed and test again in 20 minutes and post and ask for help.
  • Test daily for ketones. Put the results of the tests into the remarks column of the SS so we can see. Please report any trace ketones at all.
  • Give antinausea medication if needed
  • Give appetite stimulant if needed after the antinausea medication
  • Give extra fluids. If kitty will tolerate warm water in the food, put a teaspoon into each snack..
  • Ask the vet about subQ fluids
  • Set up a spreadsheet and test the BG frequently, I will give you a link below for the spreadsheet.
  • Post daily with updates and ask for help as often as needed.

Hi everyone, thanks for the advice! I took my cat to the vet yesterday to get him checked out and turns out he had a fever so he was prescribed fluids, an appetite stimulant, and antibiotics. Hopefully he gets better in a couple of days!
 
Are you checking daily for ketones?
And feeding lots of extra food?
This is really important, especially if he has a fever
Can you tell us what type of insulin you are giving and how much p,ease?
Are you hometesting the blood glucose ?
