Not drinking as he was

We've noticed a change in Roops the past few weeks. From drinking excessively at one point ...to hardly drinking at all. I never seen him go to the water bowl anymore even in the hot weather...which raises some concern. We have several bowls of fresh water in place.

I continue to make a soupy pate for him in the early morning. This is how I administer his crushed Zobaline pills. Throughout the day we encourage more pate. Kibble even what the vet office recommended is rarely offered. We focus on grain free IAMS Perfect Portion, Friskies Chef's dinner or Salmon, and Fancy Feast. The later he doesn't really care for.

We also offer Hartz Lickables. The kind that look like a yogurt in a tube or a freezie. Unlike our other cat, he prefers them squeezed out on a plate for him. He also enjoys the occasional Hartz Lickable stew.

He cleans himself, purrs, voids several times per day, poops at least once a day (stinky, formed but not hard) and plays with us. We are also giving him freeze dried chicken treats - Pure Bites. He drools when he hears the crinkle of the bag. Nothing wrong with his appetite.

We are finding he is growing more interested in foods (people food) that he never expressed an interest in before. He is pretty much holding his own. A smidge under 18 pounds, or a smidge over. We try to weigh home weekly. We have also reduced his insulin from 5 units 2x per day to 3 and a half. We believe he was over medicated.

No change with his neuropathy but we continue to hope that in time healing will occur. We do think he is not walking as heavy. He rolls on his back, paws in the air exposing his tummy, and will go up and down a few low steps. He cannot stand to eat or use his litter box but we hope.

It sounds like his blood sugar might be better under control if he’s not needing the water bowl so much. I hope he continues to improve.

Not long after starting insulin, Mia completely stopped drinking water. She literally never drinks water. She gets plenty of water in her wet food (to which I add broth and water), so it does not concern me at all. Cats really should not drink a lot. Often, when they do, it is a sign of something bad, so enjoy him not drinking so much!
