My little guy started peeing outside the box yesterday and shaking a little as he did, which is something totally new for him. He just didn't seem right so the vet squeezed us in and I'm glad she did. She did a cystocentesis and found Noodle's urine was loaded with bacteria--he has a UTI so started antibiotics this eve. I had planned to raise him from 3U to 3.25 today but she said not to--that likely the infection was raising his BG anyway and she wants to see if the antibiotic helps before we change anything. I was surprised that he had neg. ketones but very glad. Noodle really got stressed, though, and is sleeping it off :-) Hope everyone's kitties are having a good and peaceful day, with no bounces (and that means you too Tibbs!)

hi Christi
i am so happy you caught that uti. i did read on several posts that blood glucose can be raised by infections. hopefully his levels will come down when the uti resolves.
great job catching that one.

What antibiotic did they start him on? Some are better than others for a diabetic. And yes infection in general will elevate BGs and so will pain and UTIs hurt.

Thanks, Nadine and Tibbsy  It was so unlike Noodle to go outside his box that I knew he wasn't just misbehaving, poor little guy. Probably the shaking was because it stung when he went. I just hope the antibiotic doesn't give him side effects, like some I've read about on the forum. Thanks so much for your good wishes. I'm about as tired as poor Noodle :o (that's a yawn).

Hi MommaOfMuse,
They gave him Biomox. Is that a decent one? I appreciate any input you have because I can always call them in the morning with a request for another one if this one isn't good. What do you think? Thanks

That one should be fine. I was hoping it wasn't amoxicillian because while a great broad spectrum antibiotic its loaded with sugar because its actually flavored for human children.

Sending healing fusses for Noodle ...

Is he drinking OK? Increased fluid intake helps to flush out the waterworks. (Don't ask how I know this... )

So sorry that Noodle has a UTI... so painful for these critters.

I hope the antiobiotic works well for him. I am on a nine-week regimen of Orbax for my old civvie's UTI. Ugh... I hope Noodle is better at taking meds than my Emmylou. At least with Orbax it is only once a day and not cold.

Feel better Noodle!

Thanks, MommaOfMuse. That's a relief. He's only had 2 doses so far but seems to be tolerating it ok, though it's early yet to tell. I give it to him on a full tummy hopefully to cut down on any upset. I was glad to hear your reassurance--thanks!

Hi Critter Mom!
Uh oh--it sounds like you've had some experience with this :? Thanks for the reminder about more water, as he really doesn't drink any more, not like when he was first diagnosed. I had been adding a bit of water to his food before but think I need to step it up because of the UTI. This is the first one he's had since we adopted him 5 years ago but from what I've read on the forum they are common in our sugar kitties--one more thing I'm learning about as I go  Thanks so much for sending good wishes to Noodle. How is your sweetie feeling?

Christi

Hi RobinCot,
Thanks for sending good wishes to Noodle  Oh my goodness--9 weeks? That is a long time for poor Emmylou but I have to say Noodle is not very cooperative either at taking his med. Usually it's a two-person job, with my hubby bundling him up in a towel like a burrito while I squirt the med in. Last night I had to do it alone and wound up wearing about half the liquid. :? But it's only for 14 days, not a long stint like yours with the Orbax. But at least, as you say, it's only once a day. I hope your Emmylou feels better soon. Thanks so much for sending along good thoughts!

Hi Christi!

Unfortunately both of us have. I've had the misfortune to experience 2 bouts of cystitis in my life. The first time I had it I stopped drinking water because winky-tinkies were torture. Our GP set me straight on that and I felt much better when I started drinking extra water.

It's funny how things go in life. I ended up thanking my stars for that experience. When Saoirse developed a stress-induced UTI a couple of years ago, she stopped drinking. Because I'd been there myself I could understand how she was thinking and feeling and I knew how to help her so I gave water via syringe. Come to think of it that's another time I got carp advice from a vet (rang with concern about Saoirse not drinking and was told not to assist her with fluid intake. grr_red Bet that vet never had cystitis. )

Thank you for asking after Saoirse. We've had all the P's today (third time this week!) and her new coat is getting thick and glossy. It looks better than it has done in years. :-D

Hi Critter Mom,
Even though it was miserable for you to have the cystitis, it sounds like you really made good use of the experience to help Saoirse when she was suffering. I can't believe a vet said not to give her extra fluid! Wait, what am I saying? There is a ton of bad advice out there coming from vets if you read this forum at all. One vet I went to didn't know that glargine is Lantus and actually went and got the bottle out of the clinic's fridge to prove me wrong
Anyway, I am delighted that Saoirse is having all the Ps again and regrowing her beautiful coat. She is such a very pretty kitty.
I am amazed at your incredible spreadsheet and can only dream of the day that Noodle is doing as well as your girl--well done!
Noodle is getting LOTS more water thanks to your suggestion and telling me of your experience. I hope you and Saoirse have a quiet and non-stressful night.

Hugs to you both,
Christi
