Just a reminder - if you're using a store bought turkey, the solution they use has sugar in it....it stays in the meat and makes lots of sugar babies glucose skyrocket.

Shucks...and they usually sit impatiently waiting when they smell it.

An organic turkey that you buy directy from a farm that does it's own butchering would be ok, I think :smile:

Or, buy a can of Merrick Thanksgiving Day Dinner :smile:
 
Thank you for posting! I had intentions of sneaking some home from my friend's house to give to Buster :o I didn't know about the sugar in the meat - whew!
 
You know, I only just recently noticed that the sliced meats (ham and turkey) that I was giving my kitties has dextrose (glucose) in the ingredients list.....so does the rotisserie chicken that I buy to supplement my dog's kibble (and I usually treat the cats daily too)
I guess that's an end to that.
Wow. They seem to put sugar in everything!
 
You can also feed a little Beechnut Homestyle brand turkey in broth baby food :smile: Other brands may contain garlic and other harmful ingredients to cats.
 
fwiw, my kitties do enjoy the stuff stuffed inside the turkey....gizzards, heart, neck......just chop the gizzards and heart up into bitty pieces and dole it out

the first year i did this after Mousie was diagnosed, i just plopped it all on a plate after washing it off and Mousie went to town and ate everything, except for the neck of course. about 1/2 an hour later, she was rolling around on the rug, on her back, big full belly & four feet to the sky and i swear a smile on her face. we figured there must be tryptophan in that stuff too because she was way too happy about being so full :-) ever since, we portion it out :lol:
 
I thought for certain that can't be right but I just looked up the ingredient list on Butterball's website. Dextrose, sure enough. I just bought a breast roast, not a full turkey. Damn.
 
i just bought a cup of chicken livers on the clearance bin for my kitties treat. We will see if he likes it raw! Otherwise i will cook a few.
 
Dang it...i am a newbie and just stumbled upon this post AFTER giving my baby thanksgiving turkey because he refused his FF...and won't have available a meter until this afternoon...now i am very concerned!

No worries :smile: The sugar solution the turkey may have been injcted and/or soaked in when you bought it and any spices/rubs/etc you may have coated the turkey in before baking may cause an increase in bg levels but it will work it's way out of the cat in a day or so. Just don't inject more insulin to compensate for a possible increase in bgs, especially if you are not testing.

A lot of meats nowadays are soaked or injected in some kind of sugar solution to increase juciness and flavor. Oftentimes it's hard to tell if a meat has been "enhanced" because it's usually not on the label. As mentioned above, deli meats (from the deli or processed and those already in those little plastic containers) and rostisserie style chickens from the supermarket typically contain sguar solutions.
 
Thankk you very much squeem3 but my worry is that my vet would not write me a script for insulin yet (feel free to read my other post) and therefore my hands are tied...i am calling another vet this morning...
 
i got an appointment with a highly recommended vet tomorrow confused_cat and my cuz is en route to test Gobbles blood! i placed a call to my previous vet and they are faxing his records to my new vet :mrgreen:
 
just wanted to add that it's better he ate some turkey than nothing at all so if kitty is inappetant at the moment but will eat the turkey, that's better than nothing. there's other complications that come along if they don't eat too, like hepatic lipidosis, so make sure he's eating enough of something :-)

that makes me feel so much better...my cuz tested him--he was 267....i am going to test him again at 7 pm and then tomorrow morning at 7:30 once i get to the vet...she said my new vet is okay with this and it will save me $30 on my vet bill...thank you kindly--i really appreciate it!
 
WOW! It just so happens we are having turkey today. (friday) and I am passing time while it cooks. We always cook the neck and gizzards for the critters around here. I had no idea we shouldn't let Jack have some. In fact it doesn't sound like a good idea for anyone. Thank you so much for the information!
 
Thank you for this post and replies. We had free range turkeys from a butcher and my testing treat was some of the turkey. Lizzy's BG numbers spiked this evening and I was wondering why. Lesson learned.
