I've always been impressed with the raw power of nature, and tornadoes have to be the most powerful destructive force ever. I know earthquakes and hurricanes can cause more destruction, and over a much larger area. But the quick devastation of a tornado, with little to no warning? Yikes. It was always just "Something happening over there" and seeing it on TV really doesn't have the same impact. My daughter moved to Missouri almost two years ago. The first year, I can remember her calling me absolutely terrified because the sirens were going off. One hit a few miles from her, and tore the crap out of the base where her husband is stationed, ruining many buildings and people's homes. She sent me a picture of a gas station the day after one hit it, and she had just gotten gas there a couple days prior. It was "gone" pretty much. I know it's still not "me" that's affected, but having her call me brings it a lot closer to home.
That water spout, if it had somehow managed to hit where that picture was taken, would have torn part of this island to hell and back. It made an awesome photo, but it also made a big impression on everyone who saw it, who realized what a huge difference about a half mile can make.
