Re: No sunrise today.....

That's pretty cool. And pretty pretty.

I assume those aren't especially dangerous?

Re: No sunrise today.....

As long as they stay over the water (unless you're a dolphin I guess). But had it come onto land, yeah, it would have tossed a few RVs around like tonka toys. It was a lot bigger than it looks in the pic.

Re: No sunrise today.....

Is there technically any difference between a waterspout and a tornado, besides that one is over water?

Re: No sunrise today.....

I think they are the same thing, other than location.

Re: No sunrise today.....

You work in a neat place. That was really cool. A few weeks ago we had a thunderstorm front that was moving south to north and the line of demarcation was extremely clear. Thank you for sharing.

Re: No sunrise today.....

Holy crap CArl,
thanks for sharing but that scares the bejesus out of me!

Re: No sunrise today.....

Awesome Teresa!!! Where is that? Just what it looks like here, with two exceptions. We don't clear a "ramp" for them to follow. They pretty much have to deal with whatever nature puts in their way, and when they head to the water, they spread out a lot more.
And on our beach, everyone wears neon orange shirts! I'm guessing the shirts mark the people as authorized to be that close to them.
I'm supposed to go to 2 nest inventories tomorrow evening, so hopefully I'll see a few and get pics. I've got hundreds of pics from this year but haven't gone thru the exercise of resizing them so I can post them on the board. I'll try to post a couple of "action shots" later tonight.

Re: No sunrise today.....

The pic was nabbed off facebook and, since it had Sanibel in the text, I'm assuming it's from Sanibel, Florida. I had to nab it for you, Carl. :-D

Re: No sunrise today..... Updated w/ turtle pics!

OK, I had a few minutes to resize some photos and upload them to Photobucket.

Everyone remember the story "The Little Engine Who Could"? Well, that's what I thought of when I saw these photos a few days ago. It's about 15 pics out of well over 100 that track a baby loggerhead from the nest to the water. The lady (Tina) that took these is an incredible photographer, and I think turtles are her favorite subject.
For some reason, when I uploaded them, they are in my photobucket album in reverse order, so if you view it as a slideshow, it's backwards! I have no idea how to flip it around, but anyway, I hope you enjoy them. You might start chanting "I think I can, I think I can"...

Here's one:

And here's a link to the photobucket album if you want to see the others:

Thanks for sharing. The photos are amazing. It is a true miracle how a turtle can arrive in this harsh world so small and grow to be so large.

Another pic that made me think of you, Carl.

I have no idea where this is from (other than I nabbed it off Facebook).

Beautiful! I'm guessing a diamond back terrapin or some other land turtle, judging by the size of the egg. He or she is really tiny.
Thanks Teresa!

Carl

It'd be easier if you could see either the end of his legs (to see if there are any "nails"), or his belly. Of course, it could be a species I've never seen before, but most sea turtle eggs are bigger. Loggerhead eggs are the size of a ping-pong ball or a golf ball.

Still a very cool pic. It's awesome to hold a tiny living thing like that in your hands!

Carl

That's what struck me (and reminded me of you) ... such a tiny baby turtle just coming into the world and holding it! Just seeing the picture took my breath away. :-D

I don't think I've posted this before, but this was last Summer's last turtle just before I set it down for the sprint to the ocean.

The focus sucks, I guess I need to get a scanner! (It's a picture of a print).

Love the turtles Carl (and even the FB ones!). The water spout is pretty impressive too. Had something inland a few days ago - sky looked about the same, but only touched down briefly. And today they were showing similar ones on Lake Michigan (probably Milwaukee vicinity). Cool when they're up there - devastating when they destroy homes and lives.

I've always been impressed with the raw power of nature, and tornadoes have to be the most powerful destructive force ever. I know earthquakes and hurricanes can cause more destruction, and over a much larger area. But the quick devastation of a tornado, with little to no warning? Yikes. It was always just "Something happening over there" and seeing it on TV really doesn't have the same impact. My daughter moved to Missouri almost two years ago. The first year, I can remember her calling me absolutely terrified because the sirens were going off. One hit a few miles from her, and tore the crap out of the base where her husband is stationed, ruining many buildings and people's homes. She sent me a picture of a gas station the day after one hit it, and she had just gotten gas there a couple days prior. It was "gone" pretty much. I know it's still not "me" that's affected, but having her call me brings it a lot closer to home.
That water spout, if it had somehow managed to hit where that picture was taken, would have torn part of this island to hell and back. It made an awesome photo, but it also made a big impression on everyone who saw it, who realized what a huge difference about a half mile can make.
