NO stool this AM!

I can count on one hand (and not use all my fingers) the number of times Katie has had diarrhea during her lifetime. So it makes me a little worried. Is it normal for diabetic cats to have diarrhea? Could it be a symptom of something else?

Re: Loose stool this morning

Not particularly normal. In fact, sometimes the switch to low carb canned may result in constipation for some cats.

And yes, it may be a sign of something else - like eating foreign material, a slight change to the canned food formula (intentional or not), and a whole host of other things.

Keep an eye on it. If its an isolated incident, I wouldn't worry. If it is a sudden change which continues, a vet visit is necessary. Meanwhile, monitor for dehydration - if you pull up the scruff and let go, tenting of skin (slow return to normal position) will show for major dehydration. Its better to push your finger on the gums and let go and see how fast does it refills - slow refill occurs when dehydrated.

I know katie has been doing better lately and you've been able to reduce her insulin which is really great.
Has she eaten anything "different" in the past couple of days?

She hasn't eaten anything different that I'm aware of. I've been carefully monitoring what she eats since she was diagnosed, because I don't want any complications due to food. And my sister said she hasn't given her anything extra either.

Re: Loose stool this morning

How is she today? Any more loose stools?

No, no stool at all, in fact. When I cleaned the litter box last night, there were two diarrhea spots. What concerns me is the small smear of blood I noticed on the side of the litter box. It was dry, but still red, and it looked like it had fecal matter smeared in with it. I am very concerned about this, and have been watching my cats carefully, but I unfortunately work all day today, so I won't be able to keep an eye on them!

Blood in the stool could be serious.

Diarrhea and bloody stools were the symptoms presented by two of my GA cats,
which turned out to be colo-rectal cancer.

Find out now (vet visit) while it's possible to maybe do something.

I waited too long for both of my GA cats, until they had in-operable tumors.

Hope this is not the case with your sweet baby.
