No more Lantus shots. Opinions

Back in September the vet thought my kitty may have diabetes. He recommended the switch to can food so along with starting Lantus I switched her food to canned only. After about a week her numbers were testing normal so I stopped giving the shots. It's been over a month now and she seems to be doing great with just the canned food. Is it possible that the dry food alone was causing her numbers to be high? I'll keep testing just because I want to know she's ok. She seems to have more life now than I can remember in recent years. I'll take her back after the first of the year for a checkup if things continue to go well for her.

I have seen kitties go into remission when all dry food was stopped.Did you read the Yellow sticky note by Dr. Pierson ?

When did you start the food switch? That’s important info to record on the spreadsheet in the remarks column. We have had quite a few kitties go off of insulin with a food switch and a little insulin support, though typically we’ll taper the dose down slower than you did.

I hope your kitty continues to do so well. Keep up the low carb wet food and periodic testing.

Is it possible that the dry food alone was causing her numbers to be high?

Absolutely!! Although most cats need at least a short term course of insulin, we've had cats that only required the food change to go into remission.

The important thing to remember is she's still diabetic...you don't want to go back to high carb food for the rest of her life.

Awesome for Pussasaurus! I hope no more insulin is necessary. Like Chris said, once a diabetic, always a diabetic, but now a food controlled one. Keep on the LC wet food and make sure a dental in done yearly as dental inflammation and /or a tooth ache is one of the number one things that can take a cat out of remission.
