Our civvie, Midgie, had part of her lung removed on Monday due to a tumor. We just got the call from the pathologist. It was a well-differentiated, primary tumor and they are confident that all of it was removed in the surgery. They recommend follow-up x-rays every few months but no chemo! dancing_cat

I know that's a huge relief to you (and her, if she had any idea about the treatment!).

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Amy,

That is so awesome!! I hope and pray that it never comes back to Midgie. I am so happy for you both!!

This is what took away my Seasaidh almost three years ago. I wish I had caught it early, but I hadn't, and it was a large tumor. He had chemo, but no surgery. The chemo *did* help, though, as it got the tumor to shrink some. But unfortunately it had metastasized and I had to let him go.

I'm so sorry, Heather. It seems like too many of our kitties have this.

We managed to catch this very early. The tumor was about 1.5 cm, relatively small. The interesting thing is that yesterday the vet said he didn't think the tumor really had anything to do with the heavier than normal breathing I noticed, which caused me to take her in to start with. She also has scoliosis and her ribs are wonky (we found this out from the x-ray. Its not noticeable just looking at her). He thinks she might have been laying in just the right position to make it more noticeable to me. It very well might have just been a twist of fate that caused me to take her in and for them to x-ray her. Otherwise we probably wouldn't have found the tumor before it spread.

It definitely was fate that you found it early. I'm not really sure what exactly happened to Seasaidh, but I think his appetite went down as the tumor grew. I realized something was wrong when he tried to jump up on my bed in the middle of the night and had much difficulty. He couldn't stand up but he somehow was able to crawl up on the bed using his front two paws only. I took him to the ER vet and they said his potassium was a little low, but they didn't think it was low enough to cause weakness in his legs. While he was there they did a bunch of tests, including x-raying his lower legs. This radiograph showed a tiny anomoly in the upper left hand corner that almost went unnoticed. They did another x-ray, this time of his abdomen, and it showed a large tumor in his lungs. They didn't say how big it was, but it looked very large. They gave him fluids with potassium and he was walking around normally a few hours later and I set up an u/s appt with my regular vet, who then sent me to a veterinary oncologist. Seasaidh didn't have any problems breathing, at least not noticeable, until the very end.

Yeah, I hate cancer. I'm so glad that Midgie is among the survivors of it. Interesting that she has scoliosis. She is very lucky to have you for her mom.

Thank you all for your warm wishes! Its proven impossible to keep Midgie on the floor where she should be! She's healing really well and is back to being our goofy Midgie.
Here's a quick shot of her in her silly little t-shirt, on the back of a chair where she is NOT supposed to be.
