Just checking, but we're out of strips and the mail did not bring what I hoped today. So, no insulin until Monday?

Do you have a WalMart near by? You can buy their $9.00 meter and some of their strips for very little money, and once you get your strips in the mail, you can keep the WalMart meter for you back up meter. Just a suggestion.

Walgreens or CVS carries meters too. Sometimes there's some sort of promotion where you can buy strips and get a free meter. Avoid True Track. Heard that's bad. I use Bayer Contour and like it.

Also Walgreens has a quarterly magazine on diabetes. Sometimes there are coupons in there too.

Walgreens and CVS brand meters are unreliable.

You can find coupons for meters on-line. The strips, however, will be expensive at any of the pharmacies or other retail outlets. Walmart or Target will likely be your best bet. There have got to be one of these stores in Boston.

I have considered the Wal-Mart/Target route, but finances being what they are and that initial vet bill being what it was... I was most unprepared for how many strips we'd use in a week!

Hi Becca: I've heard several folks in LL say they use the WalMart Relion meter and strips which are much less expensive than others like the Contour. I hope you can do this .....it's a long time without insulin for her. But you know what you can and can't do. Good luck!!!

My strips haven't arrived in the mail yet either for my Aviva so I'm using my back-up meter which is the Walmart Relion Confirm. The meter only costs $9.00 and a pack of 20 strips costs $9.00. This should get you through the weekend. I know about finances!! Everytime I get my paycheck, I'm immediately broke again!! Very frustrating. It's gotten to the point that I buy Champ's supplies as soon as I get paid and if I have money left over I get to buy groceries. I'm never able to have a full pantry anymore, but I haven't had to go hungry. I do miss going for sushi every Sunday though!!

Yup. The two years of underemployment and constant job hunting have been a huge drain in so many ways. We do what we can.

You might want to check in the Supply Closet. People will post there if they have extra supplies that they want to donate. It may be a way to pick up a back-up meter and strips.

Thanks for the suggestions. Our meter is a newbie kit meter; it is great to have such resources. And, I love the supply closet. That's where we got the insulin (thanks Lisa!).

DH made a Walmart run; he was worried her napping was maybe higher bg counts or something. She was at 135 even without insulin this morning (reserve?). And her playtime right now is proving she was just legitimately kitty-napping! Anyway, we are set for a backup I suppose. We'll get a little more creative on the budget this month....
