Nigel update...grim

I just got home from the Vets. Nigel was admitted early this morning. Seems that his kidneys are failing. BUN was off their chart and the highest it goes is 130...CREA was 9.9. He is on IV fluids and is staying overnight. I spent an hour with him after work and his Vet said that is he looking better than this morning but the fact that he is over 15 yrs leaves me with no promises. The rest of his bloodwork was fine. His BG this morning at 5 a.m. was 94 when I took it at home. I asked her if this could have started when he went hypo a few months back but she said "no, he is an older act now and things just aren't working as well". In my heart I believe things went downhill then. I could have been giving him subq's at home. I feel so bad. Why do you see a light at the end of the tunnel only to have it go out before you get there? He's been off insulin for 11 weeks now. He was doing so well! Oh, and he was constipated pretty bad. I will let you all know what happens tomorrow. Thanks for listening.....

awww .. I'm sorry Nigel is not feeling well .. I know he is an older cat, but there are lots of older kitties on here .. he could pull through ..

Nigel may need to be kept on IV fluids to bring that creat down....max is 3 days though and keep an eye on his HCT. Then you'll need to give fluids at home and hopefully whatever is creat gets down to with IV fluids you will be able to maintain with sub-Q fluids at home. Don't give up hope....there is quite a few things you can learn to do to help him. IV fluids work the best for bringing creat levels down.....much more than fluids at home.

15 is not all that old. he must have been dehydrated, that will raise kidney values also and if constipated he was not eating and no fluid intake. does not take long for cats KWIM? hang in there. there is still hope. they will run tests after the fluids. you may want to continue these at home and increase the mirilax.
prayers and hugs my friend

dehydration is definitely going to up the BUN & creatinine

math example with fake data
10 / 100 = .1 example if 100% hydrated
10 / 80 = .125 if he was 20% dehydrated, getting him hydrated will drop him down

Sending healing white light and saying get better soon prayers for Nigel. Hang in there. 15 is not that old.
