So sorry for the post yesterday. Thanks to whoever straightened it up to look more readable. Nigel is still here. He is such a fighter and to think that yesterday I was giving up. I am not sure where this is will end up but have decided to take him to another Vet. Unfortuneately, I cannot get him in until tomorrow at 2:30. I have to fax over his bloodwork this morning and maybe they will see him sooner--I can hope. I feel that my Vet dropped the ball and isn't truly concerned about this fight.

Nigel got up and ate his canned food this morning. I decided yesterday to up his fluids to 50cc's twice a day. Gave the Metoclopramide twice. Giving him Nutrical. Stopped his diaretic this morning. It all of a sudden made no sense to me to be forcing fluids and giving a diaretic. Thought one might be working against the other. At this point, aren't the fluids more important?

Will be cooking him some chicken soon as our power was restored around midnight. Couldn't believe we were in a crisis here and the power goes out! Talk about being left in the dark.
Will be checking to see if the CRF group will let me in today after the problems yesterday.

I am not sitting back here and waiting until tomorrow as my final move. If Nigel shows any signs that he is taking a downward turn, I WILL take him to the E.R. I realize that he is far from out of the woods. Thanks so much for your help and suggestions. I will reread your replies and take them into consideration again.
 
No real advice, but wanted to send you lots of long distant hugs. As well as a ton of prayers and purrs with a couple sloppy wet drooler kisses for Nigel. Hope your boy starts feeling better really soon. We are all pulling for him out here on Plains.

Glad to read you will be going to another vet because Nigel should have been kept on IV fluids longer than 1 day to help get his creat number down more. I also cannot understand the diuretic and fluids unless you are dealing with congestive heart failure which then becomes a critical balance between not enough fluids or too much that needs to be taken down. Unless he has heart problems you should be able to do 100 MLS a day, all at one time, so you don't have to stick him b.i.d. Hope the new vet is better at treating Nigel.
 
Thanks, Hope. Nigel does have heart disease but I skipped the diaretic this morning. Awaiting call from the new Vet as to what I should do about that as far as the rest of today and tomorrow until he is seen. Leaving now to Fax bloodwork to his office. And, as usual, your Little Pink Socks brought a smile to my face. I did subscribe to the Daily Mutts email and have been enjoying it alot...but not as much as the Pink Sock!

You're going to have a water dance between the renal insufficiency and the heart problem, in addition to the sugar dance of diabetes.

Your observations on his behavior & hydration may be critical for the vet to optimize his treatment. You may want to start logging things on a time chart like when & how much he eats, when & how much he pees/defecates, activity, glucose tests and insulin administration, so any relationships among those things can be seen.
 
Thanks BJM. I actually just finished his history now going back to August when he was diagnosed with the heart disease to the diabetes to the hypo seizure in March and down to today. Also the last few days of his ups and downs. I want to be all ready for the Vet tomorrow. He has been insulin free for 11 weeks so my main concern right now is his kidneys. Over everything else. I had all but given up on him yesterday even calling on the members of this group to see if him being PTS was my only option left. It was a horrible day for me...and him. Today seems to hold more hope. He has eaten twice and had his 50 cc's of fluid but it was absorbed right away. No diuretic though. And About 10 minutes ago the new Vet offfice called telling me to stop them all together until he can go over all the bloodwork, etc tomorrow. His recent bloodwork was faxed this morning. He is sleeping curled up like a cat in a basket on my porch right now. I am going to give him more Nutrical, and the Metoclopramide as that seemed to settle his nausea yesterday. Thanks for your reply and concern. Every thought and suggestion does not go in one ear and out the other.

Prayers for Nigel. I learned with my Shiloh, don't stop fighting until they do. Shiloh lived with feeding tubes twice in his life, once for 7 months. He survived when no one thought he would. So I'm glad you are not throwing in the towel yet. Donna

Please have the vet add B-Complex vitamins to the fluids you are giving Sub-Q.

Very important since he is peeing a lot and B vitamins are water soluble...the get washed out.

Perhaps this has already been done...the fluids would look yellow. And you must keep the
bag away from light except when using it.
