Nigel is home

This is my third time writing this!!! Every time I hit “submit” I lose my internet!!! Nigel is back home. His Vet thought he would do better at home since he has no appetite and has been very vocal all day. A good sign of sorts. His BUN is 120--(normal 16-36) down from over 130 which it was yesterday. And his CREA is 6.6 (normal 0.8-2.4) –down from 9.9 yesterday. He is still very sick. Horrid breath. Maybe he was sent home so I could spend a little more time with him. I had a cat several years ago with CRF but she NEVER had BUN/CREA numbers in his range. He is to get 100cc's subq fluids starting Thursday two to three times a week until his recheck visit next Wednesday. I think he is happy to be home. He headed for the litter box, probably grateful to have cat sized one and not a gerbil size. Then he went to one of the cat beds where he is still sleeping. Not sure if he will show up for his evening meal. If not, maybe tomorrow will be a better day for him. I want to thank all who sent replies with good thoughts and encouragement. I am very grateful. I am not very optimistic but am hopeful he can turn around from this. I wouldn't have thought that he would bounce back after his hypo seizure but he did. A bit more damaged maybe. Here are the blood results from Monday. I will list only the highs and lows. I have no knowledge of these elements so if you notice any that warrant my attention just call out:

RBC---4.92M/uL---normal 5.00-10.00—LOW
HCT---25.6%---normal 30.0-45.0---LOW
MCH---20.5pg----normal 12.0-20.0---HIGH
MCHC----39.5g/dL---normal 29.0-37.5----HIGH
PLT---742K/uL---normal 175-600-----HIGH
GLU---197mg/dL---normal 71-159----HIGH
TP----9.4g/dL----normal 5.7-8.9----HIGH
GLOB----5.9g.dL---normal 2.8-5.1----HIGH
CHOL---248mg/dL----normal 65-225----HIGH
AMYL----2154U/L----normal 500-1500----HIGH

At 5 p.m. today his BG was 122 at home. After only 30 stabs....And that's about it. I'm sure I wrote more in the other two posts that didn't go through but I can't remember anything more than my anger at my internet. Thank you all for any help you can give me.

50 ml of fluids every day is better than 100 ml 2-3x per week.

If you can manage it.

When told to drink 8 glasses of water every day, you would not drink 16 glasses every
other day, would you ?

Nigel has to eat. If he soon doesn't start, think about a feeding tube. My cat almost died twice, but his life was saved both times with a tube. Donna

Lorraine,

Did the vet give you any A/D from Hills? Normally, I avoid Hills, but that product is great for inappetant cats. It draws cats to it, and you can syringe it with a 3ml or 5ml oral syringe.

Besides A/D, baby food (no onions, please), deli turkey and even Evo will give you some variety to tempt Nigel to eat.

And, I second the KFC suggestion.

Good luck with your furbaby.

Claudia

Thanks everyone for the good wishes and helpful advice. I feel very stupid----I have jars of baby food here for times like these and forgot all about them. I will try some tomorrow. Nigel has eaten three times today--his favorite Fancy Feast canned food. Not eating with the gusto he usually did but eating. He loves chicken so I will cook some tomorrow for him. I also thought it made sense to start his fluids today(thanks, Karen!) so I did that. Not sure what amount he got as it was a new bag of fluids and I couldn't gauge the amount but I got a nice bump under the skin so if it was more than 50cc's, I'm fine with that. His breath is still horrid and he sleeps alot. I know he is not out of the woods yet and I'm worried about that. I have never had much patience or optimism so this is a hard road for me. Harder for my boy though. Those BUN numbers scare me and I have no way of knowing what they are doing until next Wednesday when he goes back in for his recheck on the bloodwork. Nigel slept with us all night on the bed. He is not one to do that. He wants outside badly tonight. My husband left him out earlier (because "he wanted to go outside") AFTER I made sure to bring him in and lock the cat door and there we were with flashlights out there looking for him. He was laying up near the garden meowing away. I'm sure it's cooler out there but I don't need this. And on that note, this update will end. Thanks again!

continuing prayers for you and Nigel. if that "bump" goes down rather quickly, you can increase fluids to 50cc BID. so glad he is eating. at least that will help prevent further complications.
Please keep me updated. and yes, keep him inside unless you can make some kind of holding place. a large cage will even work to get him outside

When giving fluids, I used a sharpie marker on the bag to indicate the 'target' mark.

For example if I was wanting to give 50ml, I would make a mark 50ml below the starting level in the bag.

Then I could just look at the mark to see if I was there yet, and not have to remember "now did I start at
500 ml going to 450, or did I start at 400 ?

Just makes it a bit easier.
