After 2 days of stressing....

There was blood!! HURRAY FOR NO CAP!!! Totally worked (well, after the fourth try...lol). Now I know what it means "to get blood". Thats some amount of blood that comes out -- ooh did I just enter the Vampire Club? I spent the next 10 min scrubbing the sofa, but that's ok, because I feel better to know how it actually works now. Crossing my fingers I can do it again in the future!! I was so proud of Kitten...he just sat there (well he flinched first, which resulted in sofa-blood, but hey, at least he allowed me to poke him so many times lol)

The thing that scares me a bit is that it was +5 and his reading was 21.4 (385). Which is high no? He did happen to eat a little bit about 20 minutes before. So that affected it I'm sure, but still so high? What should my next step be? I was really thinking that things were working :(

Woohoo! Vampire Club it is! Congratulations to you and good boy to Kit! :RAHCAT

Unfortunately, one number doesn't say much. I keep hearing the mantra from others on here to me...patience grasshopper. Getting a range of numbers, especially the nadir numbers (around the +5 to +7 time frame) better fills in the picture of how he's using the insulin. And food will effect the BG numbers for 1-3 hours, so getting numbers without food effect gives an even better picture of how he is using the insulin.

I hope that helps a bit.

YAY, I feel better -- ish. First try, and BAM! dancing_cat. This time +7 at 16.7 (301) - which is showing up as yellow, even though its borderline purple. Must be the spreadsheet's way of telling me to calm down a little today. I'm so proud of Kit and I'm starting to breathe with this whole process.

Oh yea, you and Kit are on a roll! Woohoo! party_cat

While we all would love perfect numbers for our sugarbabies...a good way to look at it...higher numbers are by far safer for the kitty than too low of numbers. After we get a good idea of how the insulin is working, then we can play with the units to get the insulin as near perfect as we can. One thing to remember though, no kitty stays the same day after day - even if the food and insulin stays the same. The precious little buggers! cat_pet_icon

There is an entire protocol that you can follow for using Lantus and it has been very successful in achieving remission for newly diagnosed cats. Since you're testing, have your spreadsheet up, and are working on the diet changes, I think you're ready to start reading stickies and posts in the Lantus TR forum to see how doseage adjustments may be done based on home testing data, following a veterinary feline diabetes management. And if you're game, follow how they do the daily posts - date kitty's name AMPS~# &/or any note/question you have - and begin posting there.

Will do thanks!! I read the stickies -- wow, lots of info! Not sure if I should be joining the Tight Regulation or the Relaxed forum??
