Newly diagnosed

Rudy was just diagnosed about 2 weeks ago and is on insulin. He is peeing and eating tons since he has been on insulin (3 units Novalin twice a day). Is this normal? He also has diarrhea but has been on 2 antibiotics...I know they give me diarrhea so I gigured that would get better.

He has always been a big water drinker and as far as I can tell that hasn't increased and his diet has not changed (I have kept him on his regular diet of Wellness wet, no grains), but the volume of pee is enormous and he seems ravenous.

Maybe this is normal...I just don't know what to expect. Any ideas/advice appreciated!

From what I understand Novolin is not the best insulin for a cat. But I will let the experts address that.

I just wanted to welcome you to the best site on the planet for you and your sugar kitty.
Hang in there for more responses!

Edited to change any to "a" cat.

Hi there!

Welcome aboard! First off, Novalin N Is the insulin?? N is ususally too short acting for many cats. It doesnt last long enough. Many of the board are using Lantus or Levemir which are longer lasting, have longer duration than N. N can work in some cats but its not common that it does.

Cats that are not regulated can not use the insulin properly and are starving, and are going to urinate more also.

Have you checked out the FAQs?
http://www.felinediabetes.com/fdmb-faq.htm

Most of us on the board hometest our cats using ear pricks and human glucometers, its the only way to know what your cats blood glucose is doing on insulin, and if the dose is correct.
check out this hometesting info here:

There is much more info on the felinediabetes.com homepage.

Hi and welcome to FDMB

Kitty is peeing like mad because he's unregulated. Likewise for eating. His body can't process the food properly so will eat and eat and yet not really put weight on.

Can you say how vet got to 3u?
Ethos of this board is start low, go slow. In the main this means 1u.
As already said, Novolin N is an outdated insulin, fast acting and doesn't give the duration a cat needs (12 hours)
What's your vet like?
Do they seem knowledgeable?
Are you willing to hometest?

Abs may be responsible for the diorrhea-just need to keep an eye on it.

Should also be testing for keytones-need ketodiastix for this (get from pharmacy) Info on this in the FAQ that has prevoiously been posted.

Keep asking questions

any update? have you changed insulin? just started lantus a week ago and seem to be stable so far. keep us posted.
