my boy Mace was just diagnosed with diabetes on May 1st. I was wondering if I have to buy an Alphatrack glucose meter or can I use a human glucomcometer.

The simple answer to your question is NO you do not need to use the Alphatrack.
Most of our members use a human glucose meter
AND as an added bonus we can help you learn to do this!

yes as JT said no need to get the feline meter and the numbers here are based on human meter numbers for the most part. I have Freestyle Lite but also got Walmart’s ReliOn as a back up and because it’s so much more economical especially when you’re testing multiple times a day and going through the test strips really fast. Most folks here use Relion as well.

I don’t think there’s an issue with accuracy, but others here will correct me if I’m wrong. If you’re concerned with that though, you can bring your meter to the vet and compare results. Mine was almost identical to theirs. The difference may be more noticeable in the lower numbers but with the higher numbers, if they’re high they’re high

Can I ask where did you purchase your Alfa track ? Did your Vet mention about doing the all day BG test on Bee yet ?

Yes, i did order the AlphaTrak from my vet but she didnt expect me to ask for testing at home. Before asking, she told me to bring Bee to the clinic for the curve.
The first curve was done 2 days ago (every 2 hour)...1 week after removing the dry food

I have it in my Amazon cart as the vet said we would start testing on Wednesday at his follow up.she would teach me so it can be done at home. She also suggested the freestyle Libre if we could get it to stay on him to establish a glucose curve.

Dusty starts the Freestyle Libre the end of the week I will be sure to let you know how that goes . I’m crossing my fingers she keeps it on . Melanie how are you doing with Mace diet did you find a low carb wet food yet ? Roe

His vet said he could stay on the Friskies wet food as long as it didn't have gravy.

Using a human meter is absolutely fine. It is only the last few years that the pet meters have been available. Vets used to use human meters and some still do.
Both our dosing methods are based on the human meter BGs so it’s much easier to follow if you are using a human meter.and human meters are much cheaper to run.

He is doing better. He looks better and is more active. We were at the vet on Wednesday and she tested his BG and it was 189.Hi Melanie
