Hi everyone.
I just joined to try to help my daughter out with her kitty that was just diadnosed yeasterday with type 2 diabetes. He was really sick .
He's a little better now since he started on insulin.
She bought a home testing kit and insulin etc but now we need to figure out a good low carb diet for him .
I started stearching around and found y'alls forum so I joined to see what help I can get and what all I can learn to help her to help her sweet Sarso.
He is 12 years old.
Anyway PLEASE feel free to send me any info on best diets, how to or where to go to get accurate reliable information on proper diets for him.
I know theres plenty more we'll need to learn but we need to start with diet right mow.
I will be lurking and picking around on here so I'm sure I'll have tons more questions in no time.
Thank you all so much for including me. I look forward to any and all information y'all can share with me . Til later

Hello and welcome to a fellow kitty Granny and dear Sarso. I'm glad you found FDMB and I assure you that you will find the information you and your daughter need to help Sarso feel better.
We recommend a low carb wet diet for our sugar cats. www.catinfo.org is an excellent resource about feline nutrition. The author of that website, Dr. Lisa Pierson, has compiled a food chart HERE so that comparisons are easier. Many of us feed Fancy Feast classics and Friskies pates. There are other acceptable brands and flavors too. Dr Pierson recommends " start with protein minimum of 40, fat maximum of 50, carb max of 10, and for cats with kidney issues....phos less than 300."
Was/is Sarso eating dry food primarily? If so, here is some information about transitioning from dry to wet food. http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/transitioning-your-cat-from-dry-to-wet-food.956/
Take your time and read the information on the Home Page: Getting Started and Education. There is also a FAQs forum that will help you learn about feline diabetes and effective treatment.
We can help out with learning to test, we have all been there! It's critically important to test before injecting insulin, to be sure it is safe to "shoot". We call that the AMPS and the PMPS, am or morning pre-shot and pm or evening pre-shot BG (blood glucose).
Please take a few minutes to create a signature so that Sarso's information is available with each of your posts.
(light grey text under a post). Here's how:
click on your name in the upper right corner of this page
click on "signature" in the menu that drops down
type the following in the box that opens: kitty's name/age/date of diabetes diagnosis/insulin you're using and dosage amount /glucose meter you're using/what (s)he eats/any other meds or health issues (s)he has. You can add your name, and a geographic location (sometimes the time zone matters) Be sure to SAVE when you are finished.
Going forward you can post in the Main Health forum HERE, as this Intro forum is just the welcome mat. More members monitor the Health forum to be of assistance.
We are here to help, best wishes on this new journey!:cat:

Welcome! Most of us feed fancy feast classic or Friskies pate foods. I feed fancy feast classic and Tiki cat.

Welcome!!

It's great of you to help and support your daughter.

You are off to a very good start, and diet is really important Dr. Lisa's list that they mentioned is a very good information source since you'll find most of the brands in there and you just need to choose one that suits you and that Sarso accepts since the most important part is that he needs to eat, and as long as is 10% or less in carbs is ok.

You didn't mentioned what Sarso is currently eating but if it is dry food or any high carb food like food with gravy for example it is very important that you monitor his blood sugar before each shoot because the diet change can make a huge difference and lower his insulin needs, well actually is very important to always test before shooting that can save his life but it gets more critical when changing food
