Hi... my cat was just diagnosed with diabetes. his count last night was 20. My friend is the DVM and we talked about other testing...being done later today. Possible pilling and other options. I am so upset, i cannot lose my cat.. He tells me that WET food is the way to go. My cats have NEVER eaten table food. The only treats they get are a lick of PB or maybe cheese whiz, once a week. They do not like wet foot, so that will be a challenge. I am so overwhelmed with all the "maybe's" etc and the consequences of the diagnosis. any thoughts thanks P

hi, you've definitely come to the right place. My cat Angel was diagnosed at the end of May, I was scared, overwhelmed, worried.
I immediately researched feline diabetes and felt even more overwhelmed, but the support and encouragement I had from this board has helped so much. Angel is (fingers crossed) into his 3rd week of remission.
This link to the faq/health articles might help, anything else you want to ask just go ahead and if I can't help I'm sure others will. Injecting insulin is honestly not a problem, never thought I'd be able to do that but a few years ago a friend with a diabetic cat was desperate for a catsitter so I had him for the weekend.
Home testing is not as scary as it sounds. Anyway, heres the link and hope things go well for you. http://www.felinediabetes.com/faq.htm

Welcome! It is really scary and overwhelming at first, but the more you learn, the more confident you'll feel.

Our friend/vet is right. wet low carb food is best. Another vet explains why here: http://www.catinfo.org. She also has great ideas for transitioning from drynto wet. But we would urge you not to change the diet until you are confident with hometesting, as the blood glucose levels can drop dramatically. We also suggest you start with one of the mild, long lasting insulins like Lantus, Levemir or ProZinc, on a low dose of one unit or less.

There is lots of good info here - especially on the Main Forum page under Health and Nutrition threads. Everyone who replies to you is paying it forward for help they received when they were new and scared.

Let us know how we can help.

Welcome to FDMB,

When doing test, another thing for them to check is teeth. Can we get some extra info to try to help you best.....
Where are you located? What is your name & your cats? What is your cats current weight? HAve you and your vet talked about what type of insulin to try?

Unfortuantley PB, and cheese whiz are a BIG no  You'll need to get some diabetic friendly treats, we recommend freeze dried chicken.

Once on insulin we really encourage home testing, and recommend food with 10% or less carbs

I'll also add my welcome! There are tips for transitioning dry food eaters that you might find helpful. As Sue mentioned earlier, if you've already started insulin, then you'll want to hold off on the food change until you're home-testing. Otherwise, a better option might be to hold off on the insulin for a week or two as you learn how to home test and change out the food. Of course, you'll want to discuss this with your vet if it's advisable waiting a little longer to start insulin but as long as he doesn't have ketones or any other health issues, this is probably the safest route to begin with.

Well, how many carbs are in the cheese whiz? It might not be too much a problem if it's 0 carbs.
