Hello All,
My name is Matt. My wife and I, Ava, have just brought our handsome boy, Junior (JuJu), home from a week stay at the Animal Hospital under 24hr care. He was being treated for DKA with Hepatic Lipidosis. He didn't make much improvement over the first 48hrs, at which point we were out of money and nearly had to send him to Rainbow Bridge. Thankfully, I was approved for a Care Credit account. That allowed us to move him to the best Animal Hospital in town, Blue Pearl.
Thanks to the amazing docs and their staff, after 4 days of intensive care, he has recovered from DKA. The doc wants to see him again of Friday to check his bilirubin, to ensure the Hepatic Lipidosis is healing. He also has a bit of a fever but the doc isn't overly concerned because Junior has been fairly active. They gave me a quote on a work up for a fever, $1600, but sometimes they still can't determine the cause. So, at this point, we're just concentrating on feeding him twice a day, as well as his BID of Lantus.
My wife had to give him his first dose of Lantus at home on Saturday night. The doc stressed the importance of making sure Junior eats before he receives his insulin. Well, she was concerned that he didn't eat enough, so she didn't want to give him his insulin. I had to leave work (work has been very supportive) so we could take him to Blue Pearl for a free BG check. His BG was 480, so he absolutely need his insulin. Then the next morning I wasn't sure if I gave him his full dose. So we took him back to Blue Pearl for another BG check after 6 hrs. His BG was 430, so it's possible I didn't properly give him his injection. The doc shaved a spot on his back so it would be easier for us to see that we're properly administering the injections.
Having to run him to the hospital every 12 hrs for a BG is obviously stressful and inconvenient for everyone. I went to Walmart to purchase the ReliOn Micro but they didn't have it, so I got the ReliOn Prime. We asked to doc to show us home to before the BG test but she wasn't comfortable using that tester. She recommended the Alpha Trax 2, which has great reviews but the strips are really expensive in comparison to the Walmart brand meters.
I'm curious, does anyone use the ReliOn Prime? Is it sufficient or should I go back and find a different ReliOn model?
I should also note that because Junior received a steroid injection from a different vet the day before he was admitted for DKA, the doc says we need to wait another week before getting an accurate curve. Also, I've read an article on Catinfo.org about the importance of a low carb, preferably canned, diet for sugarcats. Junior is currently only interested in kibble but I would definitely like to get him, as well as our other cat, Kiki, on canned food.
This last week has been a rollercoaster. We are physically and emotionally exhausted. We're extremely thankful that Junior gets a second chance. I'm here to help educate myself on feline diabetes so this will hopefully never happen to him again. Any and all comments are welcome. Thank you.
