Hello everyone! I am now the proud owner of a newly diagnosed diabetic cat named Mego (Mee-go). He is a 15.5 year old male DSH and he's my baby. I have been feeding Mego dry food all his life (needless to say, no more). I had no idea how bad it is for them. He is now on Friskies pates and he loves it. I also mix in other protein as well like chicken chunks. His initial BG test at the vet came back as 457 mg/dl if I remember correctly. Since Mego hates the vet, they sent me home to try and get a urine sample and my goodness that was a challenge. I had to wait patiently for 10 hours and I thought my cat might explode! But patience paid off and I got what I needed. The urine test came back high as well, over 350. So that pretty much ruled out his normal physiological response to shoot up his BG while being stressed at the vet. As many of you already know, this has been a difficult time. However, I didn't just throw up my hands and give up despite being on a tight budget. Since Mego is in good health otherwise, putting him down just wasn't an option. After several nights of worrying about his symptoms, not sleeping well and having 1 good night of crying trying to figure out what I was going to do... I am happy to say that I found THIS AMAZING SITE and I could not have gotten through the last 3-4 days without you! Thanks to all of your message boards, tips and tricks, I had my very 1st successful home blood glucose test tonight! Using the ReliOn Mini, his first result came back at 357mg/dl which is still high, but I have already seen his excessive drinking/urinating decrease. Mego did very well, but I doubt it would have gone this well without all of your help. Even though my eyes are about to bug out of my head, or shrivel up from reading all the info here, it has been well worth it. Mego has an appointment on Monday for his 1st Lantus insulin shot. I haven't decided yet if taking him in is such a good idea - I don't want to stress him out more by going back. I may just go in for my initial training session. Since I'll be doing home testing, I would also like to avoid taking him in to get curves done. I am currently researching the best places to get the insulin for the best prices. I checked with Walgreens and CVS so far but they only come in 10ML vials. That seems too much to buy at once since they told me it has a shelf life of 28 days. Does this sound right? I believe they are planning on starting him on 1 unit twice daily. I think I will get the syringes from either Walmart or the ADW link on this site. I am also researching the most cost effective means of buying his food. I haven't read much as of yet on this topic - I guess I'll be doing that tomorrow.
Thanks again to all of you who have posted here. Your information, words of wisdom, general knowledge and pure willingness to help others out of the kindness of your hearts has meant the world to me and my Mego. I look forward to talking with some of you soon and hopefully in the future, I can pay it forward. I really feel like Mego and I are part of a great family here!
