Newly Diagnosed -- Need Help ASAP

Good luck getting food in. We'll all be waiting for news here, so don't torture us too much :-D If you could provide detail on the quantity of each food you are feeding, that is critical to tell if it is enough food.

If you have a little time, and before you go over to Lantus forum, you should pull together a spreadsheet with all of the shots and tests that you have.

The Spreadsheet is the most important piece of information you can accumulate for yourself and share to get advice: How to Create Your Own SS and Publish It in Your Signature. Unfortunately, this does not always work smoothly the first time, but once it is setup it is very easy to use. Try this if you are having trouble with the templates, and don't hesitate to ask for help

Dear D, and, of course, you too, sweet Baby,

Sometimes an inappetant cat needs reminding to eat. It's a tummy thing. You just need to remind their tummy it likes to eat.

Giz taught me volumes about tummies and being picky... Then again, Giz sent me Nikki who actually eats cat food. She's eating FF classic beef and liver as I type... Nikki doesn't like to eat alone, so that's why I'm up. If I could find an timed feeder that also provides bun rubs and patting, I'd be sleeping, perchance to dream...

Here is an assortment of food that Giz would have suggested:
Deli meat: turkey, chicken, beef, ham (not honey...), and, yes, pastrami.
Cheese: extra sharp cheddar; swiss, provolone, mozzarella, monterey jack in a pinch.
Yogurt: Giz loved peach! Blueberry, raspberry and vanilla after peach...
Back to cheese: Parmesan sprinkled over basically anything... Thank you Anne and French Fry!
Meat: Giz fried two George Foreman grills. Chicken, pork chop, steak. What ever is on sale!
Fish: Salmon (grilled or canned) and human tuna (or its juice).

Basically what ever is in your fridge. And, yes, Baby will probably eat better than you! Although I do urge you to sample the grilled meat. Protein is invaluable to worried sugar cat parents! Chocolate and grapes aged in oak also work... ;o)

Feline diabetes isn't cancer. It is doable. You'll see. I have great faith in you and Baby.

Much love and countless encouraging hugs,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart and who taught me to be brave...

PS: Cough syrup cups. Just plant one under Baby when he pees. Dip the strip and count 30 Mississippissi's...

Those are a lot of great suggestions. There are some more over on this thread where a cat is grieving: here

One thing to watch out for though: Do you normally feed baby milk? If not, you need to watch out for all of the milk products above because they can cause vomiting and diarea in cats that are lactose intolerant. Despite their love for milk, most cats don't respond well, and we would not want to add digestive problems to your problem list! Of course, if Baby is used to milk, or has not reaction, then those can be good ways to get food in.

I hope last night went well!

Good morning.

6:25 AM -- 310

After I logged off here last night I got him to eat about a quarter can of tuna with a few bites of 9 Lives Flaked Tuna (he picked the actual tuna out as best he could, go figure.) So that was around 10:30? Then around 1 am he ate almost another quarter can of the tuna with maybe one bite of the cat food.

This morning he is more lively and awake than yesterday. If I can't get him to eat actual cat food, I'm sure I can get him to eat the same amount of tuna or some deli turkey.

So, I'm thinking he should eat as much as he can and I give him just 1 unit of the Lantus...?

Thoughts?

Great to hear that he is eating something! And 310 is definately a sign we need to get insulin in him.

OK, so how much? This is always a hard question early on when we don't have much data to work with, and in this case, we don't know for sure that we are going to get him to eat if there is any sort of overreaction to the dose.

Your choices are:
A. Shoot a "full" dose. You last dose was 2u, twice a day, right? If we assume that he hit a number <50, though we didn't actually see it, then the full dose would be 1.75u twice a day.

B. Shoot a BCS (big chicken s##t) dose of 1u or even less. This is not a change of his official dose, but is a temporary decrease because we don't have enough data, or just are not comfortable shooting the full dose. Next shot, you would want to consider going back to the full dose, depending on how he responds.

Either way, you are going to need to take frequent readings to see how Baby responds to the insulin, and make sure you have high-carb food, corn syrup and lots of strips to deal with any emergency.

I am leaning towards option B, for sure.

I have Karo and plenty of strips to test. The only high carb food I have is some dry food the other cats eat. I can get something, although I prefer to stick the cat first because I'd like to get him on a schedule of a 7 am shot. The danger is not within the first hour after the shot, is it? Because I could run down to the store and pick some high carb food up after giving him the shot if I don't have to monitor him constantly during the first hour.

I like your style. I'm a cautious mom, too...

Better too high for a while than too low for a breath...

Much love and countless continuing encouraging hugs for you both,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz...
