Newly diagnosed - how do you find a vet that is up-to-date?

Hello All,

My name is Michelle and our Little Kitty was just diagnosed with DM. Kitty is 9, a little overweight but not obese, but has always eaten nothing but dry food. We are successfully switching her to canned, and the recommended dry low-carb foods from this and other sites. We have started ProZinc, 2 units, twice a day.

There has been great info here and by several vets that recommend the home testing, and without using the AlphaTrac "pushed" by the 2 vets we saw.

How do you find a vet that is up-to-date on PZI(or ProZinc), and doesn't push Lantus and buying the AlphaTrac. Tight Control would be a plus, but at least if they weren't just pushing their regime and drug company products, that would be great.

Any ideas? Has anyone used Dr. Lisa A. Pierson, DVM, via the web consulting?
Thanks so much!

Let us know the city/state you live in and there might be someone close who knows a good vet in area.

Several people here have consulted with Dr. Lisa. I haven't but would not hesitate to. She's one of my "heroes" :-)

Hi Michelle and Little Kitty and welcome to the FDMB! Lots of information here to help you with your newly diagnosed sugarkitty.

How do you find a vet that is up-to-date on PZI(or ProZinc), and doesn't push Lantus and buying the AlphaTrac.

You interview them. come up with a list of questions and call around your area.

Yes, we think Alphatraks are overpriced and the test strip cost is very high. Good if you can afford it.

Why no Lantus?

Are you planning to home test? Many of us here use the Walmart relion brand as they are pretty good and reasonably priced.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome!

We live near Boulder CO.

Will look at the Walmart Relion. Using the Walgreens TrueTrack now, and now know it isn't recommended highly.

We had read many things that said the PZI or ProZinc is more specific for cats.

I did try to interview the second vet we saw, but when we got to the office it was - the my way or no way speech.

Well, Prozinc/PZI are the only insulin types that were actually "invented" to be used specifically on cats. But it isn't the only one that works well for cats. Lantus and Levemir, both "human insulins" also work really well. My cat did really well on compounded PZI, and other kitties have gone into remission with Prozinc too.

We do have some members that live in Colorado. I'll try to message someone who might be able to help.

That stinks, and unfortunately it happens far too often. Hopefully we can help you find a more supportive vet. Even if they aren't 100% up to date, a lot of them are at least open to learning something new, or at least willing to listen and research.

Thanks again to all! With the vet questions advice here and some local neighborhood support I was able to find and interview a vet that scored almost 100% on the vet questions.

We are on our way with a vet that is happy to hear we want to home bg test, from any meter of our choosing, work with daily numbers for a while to get Little Kitty regulated, and diet was the first question she asked.

Ok great! let us know how the vet visit goes and we can then help advise with testing, insulin dose etc

Which foods are you giving?
