Well, it's been a long time. Hello to all! I've been lurking in community for some time to keep up, but haven't been posting until today. Unfortunately, now it seems necessary.

My son just called to tell me that his wifes kitty was diagnosed with FD today. Yep, my son in HI who had Hawaiian Pete, also diabetic. Oscar is a beautiful tux kitty. I think he's in his teens, but not exactly sure. Son just got a message today that Oscar was diabetic and hasn't talked to the vet yet. He didn't have any numbers or anything, but I'll get all that in the next few days. Vet numbers are going to be elevated anyway.

What he really wants to know right now is what type of glucometer is the best to get and what type of insulin he should get. I have been researching the site and found what I need to know about the glucometer. I would like some opinions on insulin. I think the last one I used was Lantus and I think that's what he used with Pete. I have read a bit about Levemir and wonder what you all think about it.

A big question I have is about the food change. He has already gotten rid of the dry. Yep, Oscar was fed dry. Not sons choice, but, as he said, it's her cat and that's what she fed him. Oscar does like wet food, so that's a good thing. Since he has already changed the food and they are going to get a glucometer tomorrow, would it be a good idea for him to hold up on insulin for a week or so and start testing now to see what the food change will do?

I'm going to email DS & DDIL later and give them a brief rundown on the basics and then encourage them to come here to do some research also. I hope they will as I cannot believe how much I have forgotten in 6 years and Pete went into remission in about 3 months, so he wasn't here nearly as much as I was. He just wanted a few basics and I already have 2 pages of *notes* to send him. Oops!

Thank you in advance for any and all advice. I know the best reside here. :)

My kitties are all doing pretty well. Old girl, Sasha, is HyperT now and gets her ear gel, which she hates. She's almost 16 now. The kiddles are 6.5 now...unbelievable! They are as ornery as ever. Sadly, I lost my sweet pupdog, Foster, last year due to kidney failure. :(

The cheapest store brand meter are the ReliOns from Walmart - go for the Confirm or Micro. They both use the same strips and they are $36 for 100. If you want to buy the meter/strips online where it is even cheaper, the unbranded Confirm is called the Akray Glucocard 01 and the unbranded Micro is the Arkray Glucocard 01-Mini. There is the new Prime that has super cheap strips but I don't know how reliable it is for cats.

For insulin you want Lantus, Levemir, or Prozinc. Lantus seems to be the #1 choice and has the highest remission stats - some cats just do better on Levemir, and Prozinc is good if you have a tough time shooting exactly 12/12 because it does not have an overlapping duration like L&L.

How much insulin is he getting? If he's getting a low dose like .5 or 1u it's ok to do the food change *if* they are testing adamantly.

Re: Newly diagnosed Grandkitty....need some suggestions plea

Thanks for the info on the meters & insulin, Ry. The more I think about it, I'm pretty sure he used Lantus with Pete. I'll mention all 3 when I email him and he can decide.

Oscar hasnt' started on insulin yet. But, they have taken him off dry and he's eating wet food now. That's why I asked about waiting on the insulin for a week or so to see where his numbers go before they start shooting, if need be. I think they caught this pretty quickly as my son is familiar with the excessive drinking/urinating. Those are the only signs Oscar has had so far. I probably didn't make myself clear about him not already being on insulin.

I'm really hoping he can be diet controlled. Crossing fingers & toes.

BTW, Scooter is adorable!

Oh - if he's already eating low carb canned I wouldn't wait too long to start insulin if he needs it. Dry food numbers should clear in 2-3 days so I think waiting a week if he's already been on canned for a few days might be excessive, especially if his numbers are still pretty high. Can you let us know what test results he gets tomorrow with the meter?

And I passed that on to Scooter. He looked at me and meowed. I guess that means thanks.

Re: Newly diagnosed Grandkitty....need some suggestions plea

Hi Sally, wether to wait on insulin or not depends on the numbers after the switch to canned. I think you can safely wait a few days for testing to see where Oscars bgs are. If they are on the high side you don't want to wait too long. ECID on the insulin. My new boy came to me on Prozinc and he didn't like it. Being inconsistently dozed before I got him didn't help. He's doing much better on levemir.
And welcome back!

Re: Newly diagnosed Grandkitty....need some suggestions plea

Thanks, Lisa! I'll pass the info along to my son. I haven't heard any numbers yet. It's still early in HI, so expect a call later on. I'm sure, if Oscars numbers are still high after a few days on wet food, they will go ahead with the insulin. I'll post later if I find out his numbers at the Vet and after they got him home. If I understood my son right, they just found out yesterday and just switched food then. So, time will tell.

Glad your new guy is doing well. I need to do some more research on FD now. So much time has gone by. But, a lot of it is coming back to me.

Thanks also for the welcome back. :)
