Hi everyone, I haven't been on here in a while. My cat Tigger was diagnosed last November and we had to euthanize him in March due to failing health :(

I am a vet tech at our city shelter and "Frazzle" is a new foster I just took home. frazzle came to us just as his name describes, Frazzled!! He was brought in by some "fishy people" who said that he wasn't their cat and they just found him,but I didn't buy it. This poor cat was in the worst condition I had seen in a while ( we see some horrible stuff working in the shelter). He was one complete mat, covered in feces and urine. We immediately sedated him and it took an hour to shave off all of his stinky matted fur. We quickly realized he was flooding his litterbox, we tested his sugar(457) and voila..surgarcat.

So I started him on low carb canned only to see if he could possible be a diet controlled kitty but no such luck. His sugar dropped some but not low enough. Yesterday he was started on ProZinc, 1 unit BID. I don't really know what to expect with this insulin. Tigger was on humulin before. Any tips on what to expect would be great.

What type of feeding schedule does he need with this insulin? Will feeding him 2 times a day be enough or does he need an afternoon meal? Which will be tricky because we both work.

Thanks

Annemarie

Bless you for taking on Frazzle. PZi is a longer lasting insulin than Humulin and should give you a smoother curve. I would give the one unit a few cycles, being sure to check the nadir to see how low the insulin takes him. I'm thinking his circumstances, the trauma of the shelter and the new food may take awhile to work and for his stress level to go down.

It would be very helpful if you would start a spreadsheet so when you need advice, we can see his history of numbers and dose. Here are the directions:http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18207 If you need help, just ask.

Here is a huge document on PZI. More than you probably need, but full of good info and links: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=32799
