I have recently had my 11yr old cat diagnosed w/diabetes. His number was 512 but everything else was healthy. He has always been a lg cat but he began urinating everywhere & I noticed that the litter clumps were the sz of a bread pan & often the wtr bowl was dry w/two cats. I began researching online & as suspected the vet said he was diabetic. I have forgotten his insulin once or twice as I work 2 jobs/7 days a wk & came hm to a huge puddle & the syringe on the table. I didn't think I could use it since it was un-refridgerated so dwn the drain I squirted it. He is definitely losing weight, still same personality, urinating has stopped, normal clumping, seems satisfied w/wet food altho it's only Friskies Pate' canned & a little dry during the day. I feed them both around 11am & 11pm as that's the hrs I'm hm. He receives insulin shots both times & haven't yet been back to vet. Will make appoint mid Aug when first job has short break & hopefully all is well. I truly can't afford this extra expense so am praying to have a quick remission. I stopped @ Petco today & purchased sm bag of dry food to try it out & they did say I COULD return it @ least half full if they didn't like it & get my money back so that's great. Anyone w/info on inexpensive foods & products, please share as I am totally clueless on this subject. Thanks much, MJ

There are 3 keys for remission ( actually 4)
1- A good insulin like Lantus, Levemir or prozinc - what insulin are you currently giving and how much?
2. Food - you want a low carb canned food like friskies pates. No dry. Return the DM dry. What was he being fed before this diagnosis? You need to be careful about a sudden food change because it can cause a drop in insulin needs.
3. Home testing - critical to keep your cat safe and make dose changes. Where do you live and we can advise a cheap and reliable meter, how to test etc
4. Diligence in doing ALL the above 3!
Let us know the answers to the questions and we can go from there! And whats your cats name?

Wendy already asked you some good questions and gave you the 3 keys to managing this disease with your feline buddy.
Here is a food chart we use to select a wide range of canned foods. You want to look for anything <10% carbs in the third column of numbers on this food chart.
My 3 kitties get fed Friskies pate style, Special Kitty pates and Fancy Feast pate. I stopped feeding dry food about a month after I got Wink. It took that long to get him transitioned fully to the canned food.
I add about 1 Tablespoon of water to each ounce of canned food, mix and stir until applesauce consistency. This keeps the food from drying out.
