Hi, just signed up. We have a 16y female Burmese, Lila. Since a dental in July have been treating for CKD (Hills KD diet). She had steroids in recovery due to problems coming round from anaesthetic. We thought CKD was the cause of her worsening condition but found out this week (weds) that she has diabetes too. Trying to learn what sort of diet she now needs. She is on 2 units twice daily of Caninsulin, we are blood testing and still getting readings of 25 -30. We are to provide vet with a curve after 1st week on insulin.

It is good that you are home testings BG. We test before each shot and periodically between shots.
You did not say when the BG values of 25-30 were obtained with respect to the insulin injection.
To help others to understand what is happening so we can help, most of us record our reading and other info in a spreadsheet. See:

A low-carb canned is best for diabetis but you should also get a low-phosporous food. No reason for a prescription food. Here is a list of commercial low-carb canned with the phosphorous value also listed

Many thanks for all the info. The readings have been in the couple of hours before the next injection. But today we have done one 5 hours after insulin(presumably peak insulin time) and it was 19.7 which is a bit more reassuring. Will need to change diet and discourage grazing we think. Early days and learning! Many thanks.

Welcome aboard the sugar train. Great you are home testing already AND your vet suggested you do curves at home. That is something you don't hear often around here.

Yes there is lots of learning and it never stops. After a year here, the light bulb just went on for me.

Read the informational stickies posted and ask away. Someone is always here to answer you.

Watch out for changing feeding patterns with CKD in the mix. CKD kitties can be prone to stomach acid problems. Fasting too long could make any tummy acid issues worse. Have a chat with your vet about this. With Caninsulin you need to feed a substantial meal prior to giving insulin because it typically hits quite hard and fast in the early part of the cycle but perhaps small snacks could keep something in your little one's stomach. If the food schedule/insulin combo doesn't quite suit there are other insulins which make it easier to feed mini meals. Ask about this if you need help in this direction.

Many thanks, it seems that vet is not too concerned re her kidneys as those readings have been stable since July. We ourselves, wonder if once her diabetes is managed the kidneys may improve still further possibly. We have tried today to modify her eating and so far provided 2 largish meals (she will have a small meal at bedtime). But this change seems to have caused a spike in bg as we had a reading of 41.6 this evening ( it's dropping a bit now). So much to try and understand suddenly.!
