Newly diagnosed and got the #s from our Vet for Shadow

Hi all! I talked to my vet today and got more specific numbers/info regarding his blood and urine tests last week:

Shadow's blood glucose was 366 (originally I got a message it was "over 250" so wanted the exact #)

There were no ketones in his urine

His phosphorus was 1.5

His creatine was 1.1

His BUN was 25

His cholesterol was high at 251.

So, I'll be starting testing his blood glucose at home this week or early next week when I get his glocometer (ordered online) ... meanwhile I'm working on testing his palate for non-fish based high protein, low carb non-by-product canned cat food. :) Also working on keeping his food intake to no more than 7oz a day (I was very bad and over feeding dry and some canned the past few months b/c of his horrible hunger due to his undiagnosed diabetes so he's more filled up now with just canned with water added but I think he's just conditioned to eating more often... )

It sounds like you have a good plan in place. Many cats test much higher at the vet because they are stressed by all the strange noises, people, smells and animals. Often they are 100 points lower at home. So I would think your plan of waiting on the insulin while you change the diet is a good one. I would get ketostix and test the urine until you get your meter.
 
Hi,

It is not clear to me that you've started treating Shadow's diabetes with insulin, so, I would worry about poor Shadow if you are going to limit food to only 7 ounces per day. An uncontrolled diabetic is hungry all the time.

Please do not wait too long to start insulin.

Hi Pam, No we aren't starting the insulin for another 2 weeks to see if diet change brings numbers down... so, I too have been worrying about his hunger level but hope to be balancing it ok with not overfeeding but feeding enough. He def. lets me know when he wants more or goes back for a nap in his bed.
 
I agree with Pam, don't restrict the amount of food too much until he becomes regulated. As you see his BG levels stabalize, you will also see a decrease in appetite. Right now, his body is not processing food properly and he will need to eat more than normal to keep from losing too much weight.
 
Thanks again for your feedback guys(gals :) ) as I am so new to this. I have basically been feeding Shadow more than what he will probably be getting when/if he does go on insulin. I've weighed the canned food out to 7oz and then split in half and then he's getting a little bit between meals. He's not asking for more and he usually doesn't hold back when he wants food. He seems much happier already and even played with me last night by grabbing my leg which he hasn't done in quite a while.

His vet appt. is on March 10th at 10:45am. I'll be cking his blood glucose this week from home when I get the monitor in the mail from walmart.
