Newly diagnosed 16 year old

Hey everyone,

Please no hate, my girl is 16 and had become more reclusive over the past 6-9 months… I noticed she was demanding more food and drinking excessively and more recently having accidents outside her litter box.
I have to say I’ve been considering getting her seen for a few months but I was so scared they’d say the worst and say she has to be put to sleep….
Anyway on Monday I made the call and the vet seen us Tuesday evening, after chats I was against putting her to sleep and wanted to try and treat what was happening…. The vet was spot on and she is diabetic….. the vet was understanding of my financial situation and said that a dose of caninsulin will be prescribed and for me to look up the monitoring of urine etc from home.
She was started on the small dose on Wednesday morning and it’s been absolutely magic… now I know we’ve only had 3 days but since that first jag she has been so settled and comfortable no crying and no accidents.
I have ordered the purina dry diabetes food to start and some senior urinalysis improvement for 12+ from royal canine…… this is a completely new journey for us and I would love to hear similar stores and see how the cats progressed.

Welcome! I remember that scared feeling before diagnosis too. Debating on bringing him in thinking eh he’s peeing a little more than usual maybe it’s just a phase.

I have ordered the purina dry diabetes food

Will your cat eat wet food? There are only a few low-carb dry foods suitable for diabetics and the Purina isn’t one. Do they have Fancy Feast in Scottland? A lot of people in the US feed the classic pates.

They might move you to the main health forum to get more help and eyes on you two. That’s normally where people start. In the meantime though, check out this post.

Aw thank you so much for your prompt reply, yes she eats wet food but sometimes she just licks the gravy…. I just grabbed the first one I could see I think in shock but knowing I need to really investigate and find what works best… I will have a look for fancy feats. Thanks again
