Smudge is newly back on the juice and tested at 275 with the old meter and 270 with the new one at 9 am and I am switching to the new one for today. I gave him what I think might be .5 unit and do not know when to take a test again. Am trying to figure out his dosage since the vet started him on 2 units Friday to get him form 500+ down to the 300's and later that night he was 200's and Saturday was so low that I did not shoot at all. I will be starting a record online here somehow after I figure it out and that way get better help.
Did I do the right thing? He dropped so crazy much Friday into Saturday and he did not need insulin. But because he was over 200 this am just tried the.5. How do I know this is right amount and how to proceed today???? Thanks

Welcome back. How nice that he didn't go sky high so long after the shot. i like your dose of .5. If you want, you might get a +3 just to get an idea of how the cycle is going. And then definitely a number in the +5-7 range to see how low the insulin takes him. It'll be interesting to see what the new much smaller dose does.....

The ProZinc forum is small but friendly. If you ever need an immediate answer or have an emergency, post on Health. Have you seen the protocol for ProZinc we put together?

Welcome! Was Smudge on insulin before? I too think you did great with the dose this morning. It sounds like it may not take much insulin to get him in pretty good numbers. Good job in not shooting when he was at 200. Since you don't have history on Smudge, it is best not to shoot when he is at 200 or below. If you gave him a shot at 9am, then you will want to give him his next shot in 12 hours - 9pm. You may already know this but you do not want to feed Smudge two hours prior to his test/shots i.e. 7am and 7pm. Then at 9am/9pm, you test, feed and shoot all in about 10 minutes. You want to make sure that he is eating before you give him a shot.

One more thing that will help you out a lot is to set up a spreadsheet. You will notice that we have our spreadsheets in our signature so everyone can view it. Collecting data is essential. Instructions: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18207

Great info. I will try to start a spreadsheet today. What is a +3???????????? Don't understand. Yes, Smudge was on Pro-zinc about a year ago. Then went fairly rapidly into remission in about a month and a half of around. I still tested once a week in the am and other times just to see but last week he crept up to 200's them 300's then 400's and in he went! When today so I retest him to see what is happening???? At 2:30 3?????? that is when he comes out for food usually again. Then aagin at 9 for sure....I am sad that he fell off the wagon. Vet did not find anything else.

Sorry. We have our own lingo. You'll see those numbers on the spreadsheet as there are places daily for every hour between shots. +3 is 3 hours after the shot. A test then tells you how the cycle might be going. A big drop means an active cycle, maybe dropping fast and low. +5-7 is usually the midcyle place in the cycle when the insulin takes him to his lowest point (also called the nadir). Youwant that number higher than 45. If lower, then you try to steer the number up with food. First regular low carb and retest in 20 minutes to be sure the number is rising. If not, then some gravy off higher carb food and retest in 20 minutes. Three rising tests and you're likely home free. If he'd drop below 40, honey on the gums, frequent testing and possible trip to the ER.

I am dyslexic so this is hard to understand with numbers. I really don't get it when people type numbers out at me and too many sentences as I have to re-read them. Takes me longer to do things in that regards. I won't be able to start the chart for several hours. I have to do other pets and I work from home also. Lost two work days since this happened. I have the low number emergency protocol on my fridge so hoping we don't have to use it. The ER is about an hour from here. I live in the country.
So should I test every hour now????? Hope not geeze....... or test at 11 and then maybe at 1 and then at 3????????

No, not every hour. I'd test now if it's around 3 hours after the shot just to see how he is doing and that he has not dropped too fast. Then again in that 5-7 hour after the shot time frame.

If you're dyslexic (both my children are, so I know what you mean) then I can set up your spreadsheet. It might be easier for me to do. I can't get to it until this evening but it will only take a couple minutes. I'll send you a private message as I need an email address. Check on the top of the page. It'll said "1 new message"

I shot him at 9 am. I will test him sat 12. Then I will test him at 3 because he wants to eat about that time either 2:30-3. Will not feed him during any of this time until I get numbers. If he is going up though do not know what to do but would think with any insulin he should go down but as you say not too fast. I am getting the Karo and food out just in case. Will look for your message but will be off and on due to working. I have to make some money as I used all of my savings Friday to pay for his testing, etc.....this pm would work better for me also on a spreadsheet. Thank you for helping. My head spins when I look at those things. I am surprised I even made it though University with two Degrees after discovering I had Dyslexia only about 7 years ago. I just turned 60!!!!!!!!!

Tested at 12:20 and he was 277. Then because it was a small blood sample I poked again and retested since I have plenty of strips now and he was 259. It appears he is going down some. Have to go to the store and return the other "human" meter since it cost me 125 and I no longer need it. aaargh! I had a shipping issue with ADW that caused me a lot of problems getting supplies and bringing a new meter in to test against the Vets but I tested the new one this morning against mine so was 5 points difference.

At 2:30 I came home from errands and saw a plate of what used to be cat food not he counter. Husband feeds the cats sometimes when I am not home. He denies this but he has early ALZ possibly and his memory is not good at times. There was one piece of squared cat food on the counter. I am hoping smudge did not get into something. Guessing maybe not but not sure. Took his test and it read 252. Not down much form last time. Will take it again at 5pm. Test was like 341. YIKES!
