Newkitty is having a CP flare today so we went back to the vet. Her kidney infection is back as well. She had to have cystocentesis, fluids, vitamins, Baytril injection, Cerenia injection, she's nauseated, her arthritis is really bothering her (the vet tech was so rough!) I just watched as she peed standing up. (I gave her .2ml Bup immediately after and put her on a bed with a heating pad) We had to stop the Adequan which was really helping her due to the +3 on her fecal occult blood test.

To make it all really, really crappy, her bloodwork showed basket cells and the cytology is taking forever to get back (not that I am in a rush to see what it says--there is nothing innocuous about basket cells from what I can see on the net). I am just so sad about all of this. I have been weepy all afternoon. She could use any prayers or whatever.

Good thoughts, healing vibes and cyber hugs coming your way, Allie. You and Newkitty really have had a lot to deal with. Hope things look better tomorrow.

Allie I'm sorry, I meant to comment on this earlier. The fecal occult blood test is useless if Newkitty eats meat, which I assume she does. The high meat content of feline and most canine diets cause false positives, and depending on the test used, a few other things (like tomatoes) can. The best test for fecal blood is observation of the color of the feces: black (melena) is an indicator of blood. (As a side note to humans and dogs, Pepto bismol causes a black appearance that is not due to blood.) To get a more accurate test you'd need to withhold meat for 72 hours or so, and even then a positive would get a raised eyebrow. I'm not certain why your vet is doing it (because of the Adequan?) but it is not useful in carnivores. I'd speak to him/her about restarting the Adequan pronto.

Her stools are dark but not black. They are about the same color as our hyper-t girl who eats exclusively FF. She did not tell me to stop the Adequan, I just did it once I got that result back. This vet was actually not that concerned about the blood (she said she'd be surprised if there wasn't blood, with IBD and hair, etc), and I asked the other vet to do the test because I was worried about the Adequan. Newkitty eats dry food (it's all her panc will take) but it is the highest protein dry there is. She also gets a wet food puree from Royal Canin Calorie control (2 cans) and 1/4 can AD, several tablespoons a day. Does that count as meat?

Absolutely it counts as meat. The results aren't valid. Why did you ask for the test? What's your concern with Adequan?

Hey Jess. She told me that the only side effect was that it caused increased bleeding at way high doses in normal animals, so precaution should be used with animals with bleeding issues. Because she was anemic and on a massive dose of pred, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a GI bleed (ulcer). It's good to know that she should be able to go back on. THANK YOU.
