Newkitty had her vet visit today. We did not get the news we wanted to hear on her bloodwork.

Last week: BUN 61, CRE 2.3

This week: BUN 83.9, CRE 2.1

My vet said she would really have liked to have seen those numbers come down already, I guess to show that this is a case of something driven by an infection more than kidneys giving out.

Newkitty had gained an ounce or two--I have been hand-feeding her and giving her cypro, so that is good. Her fPli test came back elevated. She has chronic panc so that was not too much of a surprise. Not sure if that can elevate the BUN.

The e coli appears to be a cooperative strain that is sensitive to everything. Unfortunately it is most sensitive to amoxicillin which makes her vomit and inappetant so she does not want to use it. We will continue to use Baytril, giving fluids, a B12 shot, and cyproheptadine to help her appetite.

The thing that broke my heart was she wet herself while sitting in the scale. She has never done that before and it was just sad to see. :(

If her numbers haven't improved in a week or so then she said we may need to get an ultrasound to see if anything else is going on.

I am discouraged and scared. We did so many things this week (fluids, abx, B12) and I was just praying so hard for improvement.

Dearest Allie, and, of course, you too, precious NewKitty,

Always had success with both Baytril and Cypro with Giz on those occasions she needed either. And, although Baytril has possible issues, it is tummy friendly as far as most antibiotics go, in my humble experience. I actually asked for it when ABs were needed. Just wanted to tell you that, okay?

NewKitty gaining an ounce or two is testament to her spirit and your mommyness!

Sometimes, they do things they wouldn't normally do when they're not feeling so well -- particularly at the vet's. We can simply choose to never discuss this.

It's understandable to be both discourage and scared, dearest Allie, because you are. But, please take each day as it comes and try not project your fears. Cats can be the most resilient and intuitive creatures, after all...

Please know we're holding you both close in our hopeful, healing hearts, thoughts, and prayers.

I honestly believe at the end of each and every day, Allie, that hope is the one thing we truly own.

Much love and countless hopeful, healing hugs for you and NewKitty,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

Deb, thanks for making me smile. Yes, I think she would prefer if I just not talk about the scale incident. We washed her up with some kitty bath wipes. Normally she would be grooming, grooming, grooming but she just did a small amount and laid down. I guess she is just really tired. She seems to be less painful in her belly region--she is sleeping with her legs extended out instead of tucked around her belly.

And, I agree with you about Baytril. I know there can be issues but we have had positive experiences with it in the past and I did ask for it when I heard this was urinary (it has previously been the right choice with UTIs).

Thank you for your very sweet post. I appreciate it.

Wrapping you both in cyber hugs.. I am sorry her numbers didnt go down at all.

No real advice, just a bunch of prayers, purrs and sloppy wet drooler kisses for you and Newkitty (her name still makes me smile)

Will continue to send tons of prayers until we hear that Newkitty is on the mend.
